The Storming of the Bastille took place in Paris, France on July 14, 1789. This attack by the people of France signaled the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was built to protect Paris in the late 1300s, during the Hundred Years' War.
By the late 1700s, the Bastille was mainly used as a state prison by King Louis XVI. The people who stormed the Bastille were mostly store owners and craftsmen who also happened to be Paris residents and members of a French social class called the Third Estate. There were about 1000 men who took part in the attack. . The Third Estate had recently urged the king and demanded that the common people had more of a say in the French government.
