Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is believed that it is when the Holy Quran “was sent down from heaven, a guidance unto men, a declaration of direction, and a means of Salvation”. This is the time that Muslims all around the world fast for exactly one month. The basic rule is to refrain from eating or drinking (yes that includes water too). From sunrise to sunset. If you are living near the Arctic Circle, that means fasting for 22 hours or if you are in Australia which means fasting for 12 hours. “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain Taqwa.” – The Qur’an, Al-Baqarah:183. Abu Bakr Karoli explains that Taqwa “is an Arabic word which is explained as a shield against wrongdoing and further expounded as to be ‘conscious of Allah’ or to have ‘fear of Allah’ or to be ‘cautiously aware of Allah’”. Basically if you want to sum
If you do not practice Ramadan, one of the five major pillars in Islam, then you should not be considered a Muslim. If you devote your time to fasting, praying, reciting and reading the Qur’an, you are faithfully executing your religion to its extent. Deciding what you assume is right or wrong with religion, you should not consider yourself Muslim. Muslims obey Allah they do not question what they are supposed to follow. Overall, the message that Ramadan is trying to convey is to be thankful for what you have and be kind to one another. You should not worry about having the best things in the world such as a phone or hover-board. You should donate your money and time instead to charity because on the day of judgement, Allah will grant you paradise in heaven. Do not let anyone deceive you into thinking that Ramadan is not a necessity of being a Muslim. By practicing Ramadan, you are thanking Allah for your life he has only asked you to fast for a month out of a whole
Although widely recognized throughout the world, there are a lot of misconceptions about Cinco de mayo. The biggest misconception about Cinco de mayo is that it is Mexico’s independence day. Cinco de mayo is actually the celebration of the Mexican army’s difficult victory over the French Empire’s army. This entire conflict started in 1861, when the president of Mexico, Benito Juarez, stopped paying interest on the money he owed France. This caused the French army to invade Mexico. But in a surprising comeback, the Mexican army, with just 4,000 men, overtook the French army of 8,000. The conflict started in 1861 and ended in 1867, taking place over 6 years. The end result of the battle was Mexico’s victory of France and keeping their land.
...l Muhammad’s Islamic forces finally took Mecca in an almost bloodless war. Throughout that time, Muhammad had established the Five Pillars of Islam, a creed and code which is considered obligatory for all followers of the Islamic faith consisting of rules varying from required prayer to mandatory pilgrimage. Eventually by Muhammad’s death, he had united the entirety of Arabian tribes under Islam. In Islamic tradition there are only two official holidays. The first is called Eid-al Fitr, which is celebrated at the end of a month of fasting. Generally this day Muslims around the world give Zakat, or charity in good faith. The second, Eid-al Adha, is celebrated from the tenth to the fourteenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, which is the month of pilgrimage to Mecca. Traditionally on these days an animal is killed, it’s meat distributed between friends, family, and the poor.
Dia de los Muertos translated to Day of the dead in English is a famous holiday celebrated in Mexico every year on November 1. It is thought that by doing this celebration we are celebrating death but it is the opposite, by celebrating El Dia de los Muertos we are remembering our relatives. In this special day altars are set up with candles lit up and the reason of this it is so that spirits can find their way home. The altar offers spirits their favorite food and in general their favorite things that they used to enjoy when they were around us. The most familiar symbol of this special day celebrated most typically in Mexico and in border cities such as Ciudad Juarez and El Paso Texas are calacas (skeletons) or calaveras (skulls). This ritual was started by the Aztecs about 3,000 years ago [1]. It is believe that on October 31 the doors of heaven open and all of the deceased persons can reunited with their family this is a
Ramadam is celebrated as a fasting. The duration of Ramadam is one month. During this fasting Muslims are not to eat, drink, smoke or have conjugal relationships while the sun is up. However, between sunset & sunrise they are aloud to break the fast with at first a light meal of dates and water called the “Iftar.” Then they have evening prayers. The rest of the night is devoted to special prayers and to readings from the Koran. A more heavier meal is eaten at predawn which is known as the “Suhoor.” There are exceptions to the fasting: children, elders (over 60), those who are ill and those who are making a long journey. But those who are ill or making a long journey are expected to make up missed days along with those who have broken the fast.
There are many hardships a Muslim can go through in a non-Islamic country just like America. First, for people in this country it is hard for them to get the concept about us not eating from sunrise to sunset without eating or drinking. For them fasting is not like this, it is rather different. For example, there fast iz like only eating simple foods and drinking water, for us we are not allowed to put a single thing in our mouths or then the fast does not count towards Allah. In the video it showed a girl that was in college still going through ...
For example: you can have your last meal of the day at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Next day, you can eat breakfast at 9 in the morning. That’s an easy 16 hours of fasting.
The place of worship for Muslims is called a mosque; for Catholics, it is a church or cathedral. In Catholicism, there are seven sacraments. They are “ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians” (American Catholic Organisation, 2016). These sacraments include: Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick (American Catholic Organisation, 2016). A current issue in Catholicism is that some Catholics perceive the rituals of the Catholic Church as irrelevant and old-fashioned so there has been a steady decline in the number of Catholics attending mass weekly in Australia: in 1954, it was 74% of the Catholic population, but in 2006, it was an estimated 6% (Zwartz, 2013). Like Catholicism, there are also duties to be performed in Islam, which are called the Five Pillars of Islam. Stefon (2010, pp.68-72) states that these are: “the profession of faith, also called the shahadah”, “five daily canonical prayers” (also called salat), “the obligatory tax called zakat”, “sawm, the fast during the month of Ramadan” and “the annual pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca”. It is often difficult to maintain these rituals in contemporary Australia because Muslims are a minority group and the Australian culture does not easily accommodate these rituals. For example, the celebration of Ramadan is misunderstood and not easily accommodated by Australian culture. The Glory Garage skilfully highlights the misunderstandings of Ramadan in Australia “students are told they can’t use fasting as an excuse to get out of sport” and many people also “think of fasting as a way to lose weight” and do not understand its religious significance (Jamal and Chandab, 2005, pp. 72 and 75). Muslim festivals like
Mardi Gras began in France during the medieval ages. Originally it was known as Boeuf Gras or fatted calf and it transitioned into Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in the 1700s. French explorer Jean Baptiste de Bienville brought it to the United States. He arrived at what is now Louisiana on the eve of Mardi Gras and on March 2,1699 and he named the point he arrived at Pointe du Mardi Gras. However, Mardi Gras was first celebrated in the United States in Mobile, Alabama in 1703. Bienville later established New Orleans in 1718 and by 1740 most people in Louisiana celebrated Mardi Gras by participating in parades. The governor of Louisiana, Marquis de Vaudreuil, developed formal balls with masks as another way to celebrate. To later celebrate the visit
...g problems in one’s life and identifying evil. Based on my experience I discovered that Muslim people seek to reach out to others and welcomed me with open arms as a part of their community. They painstakingly answered my questions and remained open and honest with me. I am extremely glad that I took this opportunity to experience this ritual because it gave me a new perspective on the Islam faith and a deep respect for those who participate in Ramadan.
Upon learning about Judaism, I was intrigued with the different holidays the Jewish people celebrate. In particular, I was especially interested in the holiday Yom Kippur, which is a part of the high holy days. The high holy days consist of Yom Hakippurim (Jewish New years) and Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is known as the Day of Atonement, and is also referred to as “Sabbath of sabbaths,” (Diamant). Yom Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism. I will present this project to the class with the aid of multimedia; I believe this presentation will be most effective, when engaging with several images of the various aspects of this holiday. My objective for this project is to learn about Yom Kippur and present this holiday to the

Their religion, women, kids, and beliefs play a big role in the culture. Islam is the religion which claims a vast majority of the Iraqi population, the majority of the Iraqi’s identify with the Arab culture. The second-largest cultural group is the Kurds, who are in the highlands and mountain valleys of the north in a politically autonomous settlement. The Kurds occupy the provinces of As Sulaymaniyah, Dahuk and Irbil, the area of which is commonly referred to as Kurdistan. Almost all Iraqi’s speak, read, and write their official language, Arabic. As in Kurdistan, they speak Kurdish so they can distinguish between the Iraqi’s and the Kurds. There are five pillars of Islam: praise of Allah as the only God, with Muhammad as his prophet; prayer five times per day; almsgiving; fasting; and pilgrimage to Mecca. Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. This month consists of a period of fasting from all food, drink, and activities such as smoking and sexual intercourse during daylight hours. At nighttime the fast is broken, in other words, you can do what you cannot during the
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; it is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. It is also the month the Quran, the Allah (God's) last testament, has revealed on. As for that, Ramadan is hugely an important experience in the Muslim's life. During the holy month, it is expected from the Muslim to devote his time and effort for Allah, especially on the last 10 days of the month when the most honored worship is to praise Allah for everything he blessed us with. Muslims used to plan their daily life – in general – based on the five Salawat (prayers) they observed every day at prescribed times; but after the industrial revolution, and many other historical and political aspects, the daily
