Linkin Park was an alternative metal band that was formed in 1996 in Los Angeles. Linkin Park originally started off as a band called Xero, which was composed of three of the members from Linkin Park. Linkin Park was known as rap-rock band, which was a mixture of rap and heavy rock. The band was made up of seven members who all contributed to that Linkin Park that signature sound. The lead singers were Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington. Mike Shinoda was the rapper and Chester was known for his “torturous voice” as he provided the heavy rock part of the singing. Linkin Park was not officially formed until 2000 when Hybrid Theory was released. The band Xero was started in junior high when the three current members found out that they all played different instruments. They stayed together all through high school and they started to call themselves Xero. While still playing in Xero, Shinoda enrolled at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design to study graphic design. While he was there, he found out that his roommate and his brother were DJ/turntablist. His roommate was named Joseph Hahn. Mike convinced Joseph to join their band Xero, playing the turntables and DJ-ing. Joseph then convinced his brother Joe to join the band as well. By this time the band was starting to get hook some small gigs around town. While in college Brad Delson’s roommate, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, joined the band as a bassist to try and earn some extra money. The band played around Los Angeles until a singer from Arizona named Chester Bennington joined the band. When Chester joined he had a meeting with Shinoda and they started thinking of new band names. In 1999, everyone settled on the name, Linkin Park, which was a misspelling of Lincoln Park in LA. There name was an homage to where the band first started practicing.
