Glacier Melting cameron dixon Some people may ask the question of what is Glacier Melting? Glacier Melting is the melting of glaciers worldwide. Glaciers are large sheets of snow and ice found most commonly on land. 75% of the world's fresh water can be found in all the world's glaciers. Glacier melting is caused by warmer temperatures due to a rise in greenhouse gases and more humans causing an increase in carbon dioxide gases. Carbon Dioxide is a gas that is commonly found in our atmosphere, but since the early 20th Century there has been an dangerous increase in this gas. Even though we use this gas to turn it into the oxygen we use to breath, this increase has threatened the planet in many ways. In the last 100 years, sea levels have risen …show more content…

One of the main effects is the rise in sea level, which could destroy many cities and kill millions of people. A recent study states that oceans are expected to rise 2.5-6.5 Ft. by 2100. That is enough to flood many cities on the East Coast of the U.S., other estimates show a 23-foot rise which would submerge London. Another effect would be a loss of fresh water since 75% of the world's freshwater is found in glaciers. Much of the glaciers would melt, cause the frozen fresh water inside to flow into the ocean and mix with salt-water. This mixture could cause an increase risk of rockslides, outburst floods, and many other risks. This could also cause the ocean surface to heat up causing thermal stratification, which would cause a change in temperature at different …show more content…

One way is alternative energy sources such as solar power, wind energy, hydropower plants and many more. These solutions can be used to help eliminate the overuse of fossil fuels in cars and factories. Soot is another cause of glacier melting, soot falls out of the air in 7 days so eliminating soot can be an important brake in stopping glacier melting. There are other solutions, like driving less, conserving water, conserving electricity use or switching to alternative electricity, these are things that everyday people can do to stop or slow down the furthering of glacier melting. In conclusion, Glacier Melting is an important topic worldwide and should be concerning everyone. There are many causes that can be prevented by humans if only they would listen and if they that if this continues it could potentially put their lives in danger, as well as their neighbors, friends, and family or change the way of the world as we know it. If we stop some of what we are doing, we can slow the process giving some of the glaciers time to rebuild and repack their snow. Doing this, could not only save millions of lives, but it could also be the beginning to finding a solution for this global dilemma called Global Warming which is a cause of this sub-dilemma Glacier
