In the fourth quarter of eighth grade in Art and Computer Science I worked on a project on Frida Khalo. Although the topic selection was random I was excited to do my project on Frida Khalo because I have visited Guanajuato, Mexico where she is very popular. The computer science part of this project was an Adobe Spark Video where I informed viewers about Frida Khalo and her work. I really enjoyed being able to research such an interesting topic. Through this research I really came to appreciate Frida’s work. This is the eighth grade theme and Frida’s work really made me embrace it. The Art part of this project was a recreation of one of Frida’s works. I selected “Me and My Parrots” (pictured below) which is a self portrait of Frida and her
Ester Hernandez is a Chicana artist, best known for her works of Chicana women. Ester’s goal is to recreate women’s lives to produce positive images of women’s lifestyle and to create icons. Her piece, Frida y Yo, contains the iconic painter Frida Kahlo. Frida, after being in multiple accidents causing long-term pain and suffering, began painting, mostly self-portraits, to portray her reality and glorify the pain. Similar to how Hernandez's goals are a juxtaposition to Frida’s artwork, the art piece Frida y Yo creates a juxtaposition between life and suffering and death and fortune.
Thesis Statement: I want to share the Life of Frida Kahlo that led to her recognition as an Iconic artist even today.

Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo had an immense amount of impact on the world of art. Warhol has always explored the rooted connection between celebrity culture and artistic expression, which left him with a lasting legacy that has marked him for one of the most famous artists to have existed. The population was fascinated by Warhol’s ability to blur the lines between fine art and innovative design, providing him a large following and work that will be remembered for decades. Kahlo too is a name that is not likely to be forgotten. Her work is recognizable on a global level and her works are loved by many people. Frida Kahlo’s life was one of tragedy and loss; her paintings are representations of how she was feeling and what she was thinking. Using different methods of symbolism, Self-portrait on the borderline between Mexico and the United States was her way of expressing her homesickness and how she was feeling during her difficult time in the United States of America. Kahlo’s work is a perfect example of turning a dark hurtful time into a beautiful piece of artwork
Frida Kahlo is known for the most influential Latin American female artist. She is also known as a rebellious feminist. Kahlo was inspired to paint after her near-death bus incident when she was 17. After this horrendous incident that scarred her for life, she went under 35 different operations. These operations caused her extreme pain and she was no longer able to have kids. Kahlo’s art includes self portraits of her emotions, pain, and representations of her life. Frida Kahlo was an original individual, not only in her artwork but also in her
I think that Frida's life greatly influenced her paintings. Most of her paintings have some form of nature or wildlife featured in them. Not only did she display a theme of nature, she also liked to wear indian women clothing. Her style is realistic and lifelike. She has many paintings that fall into the categories of symbolism, surrealism, cubism, modern art, and magical realism. Not only that, a lot of her paintings have herself in them. The color use of Frida Kahlo is very lifelike, she uses natural colors; she doesn't use many bright colors. She uses many primary colors. I have also noticed that a few of her paintings exhibit monkeys. Her paintings remind me of the Mexican culture that I studied in my two year Spanish class. Artemisia’s paintings are very feministic. I believe that Artemisia put her life into her paintings as well. The paintings of Artemisia Gentileschi that I have seen all have women displayed in them; whether they are her, or other women. I would recognize her paintings because almost all of her artwork features a woman reaching out for something. Women in these paintings have a facial expression, that is the same in almost all of her works. Artemisia had very lifelike paintings, they were beautiful but also displayed a tense mood. Her paintings were very striking as were Fridas. Artemisia's paintings are historical and display a tone of hurt. In comparison, both Fridas and Artemisia’s paintings
Art is a very important part of humanity’s history, and it can be found anywhere from the walls of caves to the halls of museums. The artists that created these works of art were influenced by a multitude of factors including personal issues, politics, and other art movements. Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, two wildly popular artists, have left behind artwork, that to this day, influences and fascinates people around the world. Their painting styles and personal lives are vastly different, but both artists managed to capture the emotions that they were feeling and used them to create artwork.
The artwork I chose for the art criticism project was ‘The Survivors’ by Kathe Kollwitz. The piece was created in 1923 in Berlin, Germany, where she resided with her husband. She and her husband resided in a poorer area, and it is believed to have contributed too much of her artwork style. ‘The Survivors’ is currently displayed in two museums, the MoMA and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum. In the piece there is a woman directly in the middle, with sunken in cheek bones is draped in a black cloak. Her arms are around three small children, who look very frightened. On each side of her body there are an additional four small children who convey sadness upon their innocent faces. Also, they are outstretching their arms as if they are begging for her to give them something. In the background, on the top left side, there are two elderly men with their heads down, looking as if they are very sad and
Through Frida Kahlo’s extensive self-portrait pieces, audiences are able to view her life in an almost biographical way. Each portrait conveys deep emotion and meaning, and carry a story which Kahlo has experienced. Her self-portraits are very personal, and overall show just how tragic her life had been.
