Christian Engineering Applied to Search and Rescue
A person’s perspective determines their motivations and thus influences their actions. Within a reformed perspective, man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever (WSC Q1). Christians should live in such a way that in pleasing to God so that they might live with him eternally. Since humans were made in the image of God, they should strive to be like God, that is, aiming to embody the characteristics of God. This applies to all aspects of life, from relationships to one’s career. For example, an engineer should design with cultural appropriateness, transparency, stewardship, integrity, justice, care, trust and humility. Not only would the stretcher be a means of common grace, it is also a method of care. Throughout the Bible, God showed care for those who are hurting. In 2 Kings, Elisha the prophet performed wonders that provided for the recipients. A poor widow was provided with jars full of oil that she could sell. The Shunammite’s son was restored back to his parents. A group of prophets made a poison stew, but it was cured so that the group could eat during a time of famine. Similarly, God provided more than enough food for a hundred men to eat, be satisfied, and have left over food. (2 Kings 4:1-44). In the New Testament, Jesus also showed care. He performed miracles such as healing the sick. But as seen in John 11:35, Jesus wept; he genuinely cared. God personally cares about his children. The position of an engineer gives them an opportunity for service and not selfish ambition. An engineer could easily focus only on working for the next paycheck. But Christian engineers are called to consider other aspects of their designs. For example, the applications of a self-leveling stretcher is a way to distantly provide care for others. But if the product application may not have roots in Christian theology, the Christian engineer should strive to glorify God in other ways. An engineer should work with integrity, kindness, and responsibility.
Focusing on a search and rescue vehicle. Integrity is needed: design strength. Kindness fundamental in teamwork, better teamwork allows for more ideas and more advances. Likewise responsibility reinforces the design strength and the teams strength.
