Recommended: Police and civil rights movement

After completing these courses, the final step before becoming a police officer is to complete field training. During this time, the cadet will team up with a higher ranked officer and go on a routine patrol. Many agencies make their recruits go through different shifts such as night shifts, day shifts, weekdays and weekend shifts. Moreover, to get full exposure to the reality of the job, the trainees are required to work in its different areas. According to the BJS, “The average time for this field training is about 180 hours or about 8 weeks.” However, training is never over when a person finishes field training and the academy, most agencies make them take educational classes or programs to keep them up to date and certified.
Police recruit methods are based on two types, stress, and non-stress related training. Stress training is modeled after a military boot camp; they complete daily inspections, paramilitary drills, intense physical demands, public discipline and withholding privileges. The non-stress program is more relaxed in academics and collegiate environment.
