Framing Qualitative Research
Qualitative research provides a greater depth of understanding and it is a valuable took for the field of educational leadership (Brooks & Normore, 2015). Qualitative research focuses on gathering descriptive, verbal data to explore and understand the complexities of a phenomenon in a deep, comprehensive manner; data interpretation and inductive analyses are conducted to identify general themes (Creswell, Research design: Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches, 2014). The findings are then collected and used to complete a qualitative study. The following are methods that are used for qualitative research (Crossman, 2017):
• Direct observation: A researcher studies people as they go about their daily lives; this is usually conducted in a public setting with no interference from the observer (Crossman, 2017).
• Open-ended surveys: Many surveys are designed with open-ended questions to investigate the reason people make choices the way they do (Crossman, 2017).
• Focus group: The researcher engages a small group of participants, about 5-15, in a conversation to gain data relevant to the research question (Crossman, 2017).
• In-depth interviews: Researchers conduct in-depth interviews by speaking with participants in a one-to-one setting. Sometimes a researcher approaches the interview with a list of questions, or topics of interest (Crossman, 2017).
• Participant observation: The researcher participates in events in order to observe others in first-hand experience settings (Crossman,

Guba suggests credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability are all appropriate terms to replace conventional terms for trustworthiness (Lincoln and Guba, 1985). Triangulation of data and embedded thich description enhance the credibility of the study (Shenton, 2004).
