Reality TV has quickly become a part of the American society throughout the years. It is like a car wreck. No matter how badly you want to look away, you can’t. “Reality TV shows are television programs about ordinary people who are filmed in real situations, rather than actors.” (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Thesaurus). It relies on the willingness of ordinary people to have their lives played out in front of a camera. Teenagers in today’s society are highly influenced by things that they see on reality television.
The Girl Scout Research Institute conducted a study about teen girls and reality television in 2011. This study was called “Real to me”. This study focused mainly on girls, so all of the percentages gathered were based on female viewers. They only surveyed females because reality TV attracts far more female viewers than male viewers. Most reality television shows are geared towards women like “Teen Mom” and “Keeping up with the Kardashians”. 65% of MTV’s audience is female (Sotonoff). The study revealed that 47% of its participants watched reality TV on a regular basis. 30% watched it sometimes and 23% rarely or never watched it at all
(Melnick). Eight out of ten girls that regularly watch reality TV shows like “Jersey Shore” and “The Hills” believe that these programs are true to life, and that they are “real and unscripted”. Based on the Girl Scout: Real to Me study, 75% of viewers believe that these shows make people think fighting is necessary for a romantic relationship to work. 78% also agreed that being mean was a normal part of a relationship between girls (compared to 58% of non-viewers). The idea of reality television changed even more when talk shows like “Dr. Phil” and “Oprah” started to come out (Slocum). Then came the idea to be able to watch the series 24/7 like in “Big Brother”. Finally came the way that reality TV is today. Shows like “Teen Mom” and “Keeping up with the Kardashians became hits.
Reality TV can have a strong impact on the teenagers of today’s society. Reality television went from game shows made just for entertainment, to shows that match up people with their soul mates or some other ridiculous concept. Modern reality TV has a strong impact on today’s society. It is everywhere you look. Almost everyone knows the different shows and the different gossip that is happening in each of the shows.
