Energy is used in various everyday situations and activities. The ability to perform work or do vigorous activity is defined as energy (The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, 2005). Energy has two extensive categories: kinetic energy and potential energy (Trefil & Hanzen, 2013). Kinetic energy is energy with motion inside an object or the motion of the object and potential energy is energy that is stored or saved for future use (Trefil & Hanzen, 2013). There are numerous energy sources; however, energy sources are categorized into two types: renewable and nonrenewable (Trefil & Hanzen, 2013). Renewable energy cannot be exhausted and comes from sources that replenish as soon as they are used (Collins English Dictionary …show more content…
Geothermal energy advantages include: cheap, reliable, lessens dependency on fossil fuel, creates job, boosts economy, requires no fuel, environmentally friendly, the energy source is free and plentiful (The Children University of Manchester, 2012). The disadvantages of geothermal energy include: limited space where geothermal power stations can be built, sometimes geothermal site experiences dry spell of steam, difficulty controlling the harmful gases and minerals that come from the earth (The Children University of Manchester, 2012). More disadvantages of geothermal energy are: cannot be transported easily, expensive initial costs, financial risks are expensive, wells eventually deplete, and there are limited geothermal fields located in a few areas worldwide (Energy4me, 2015). Advances in technology have extended the range and size of important resources and direct applications for things such as heating the home (California Energy Commission, 2015). A geothermal field in California has one of the largest groups of geothermal power plants in the world, which makes California the appropriate location for geothermal energy (California Energy Commission,
One form of alternative energy is called geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy that is created and stored beneath earth’s crust. The most recognizable form of geothermal to most people would be in the form of a hot spring. Heat from Earth’s core heats rock and water differently; some spots can reach up to 700 degrees, whereas some receive not much heat at all. Steam from the water that receives the most heat is trapped in porous rocks underground. This is called a geothermal reservoir. Geothermal energy is very useful because it is renewable, and limitless. Heat continuously flows from the earth’s core, and continues to heat the water and produce steam. Geothermal is also useful because it is 80 percent cheaper than fossil fuels, and it requires no fuel. In fact, the use of geothermal energy decreases the independence on fossil fuels greatly. Geothermal energy does not produce pollution and could potentially save millions of dollars per year if used to replace fossil
The sun has been a major aspect of life since the beginning of time. People used many other forms of energy before electricity was discovered. There has been a debate over energy resources for years. Many people are worried about what current energy resources may be doing to the environment. Oil spills and nuclear power plant mishaps have only been a few accidents that have had a big impact on the environment and the people who inhabit it. There are plenty of energy sources that do not harm the environment and are still able to get the job done. Solar energy is one energy alternative that will insure the betterment of the country and, at the same time, protect the natural environment.
...Kroeker designed the first commercial geothermal heat pump to heat the Commonwealth Building in Portland, Oregon and demonstrated it in 1946. In 1960, Pacific Gas and Electric began operation of the first successful geothermal electric power plant in the United States at The Geysers in California. The original turbine lasted for more than 30 years and produced 11 MW net power. The binary cycle power plant was first demonstrated in 1967 in the U.S.S.R. and later introduced to the U.S. in 1981. This technology allows the generation of electricity from much lower temperature resources than previously. (Wikipedia, 2011)
Section 2: Energy Energy is defined as the capacity of a physical system to perform work . As it is different from force that energy is a scalar quantity with magnitude but not direction. This decides that it is easier to calculate the energy change compared with force change, and it allows us to generally analyze the motion of a roller coaster instead of specifically. Forms of energy Energy exists in a variety of forms including light energy, nuclear energy, sound energy, mechanical energy, and so on.
... boats you could use geothermal energy to reduce the gas needed in countries around the world in the near future. With new technology you can heat houses in the winter and cool houses in the summer. They can also create electricity for cars, houses, buildings, etc. these are just some of the ways that geothermal energy could be used as.
Some climate scientists such as Ken Caldeira believe that humans will never reduce greenhouse gas emissions and that the earth will eventually return to the climate of the Cretaceous period due to climate change (How Far Can Climate Change Go?, 2012). There is enough evidence to suggest that this will not happen. Thanks to our individual senses of environmental consciousness, our uses and further research of alternative energy sources and fuels, and the potential for space colonization and exploration. We still have a chance to reverse our impact on the planet because of further advancements in technology and a sense of global consciousness.

Geothermal energy is the thermal (heat) energy within the planet. Its is considered a renewable source of energy as it has always been around for for an abundant amount of years it will probably still be used in the next years because its source is the almost unlimited amount of heat generated by the Earth's core. Even in geothermal areas dependent on a reservoir of hot water, the volume taken out can be injected, making it a sustainable energy
For many years we have used energy to power our houses, cars, and cities. Most people are concerned with the energy we are using kills our planet. We have developed ways to combat that issue using natural renewable resources one example is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is generating electricity from an atom’s center, or the nucleus. There are two ways to harvest the energy, though fusion, and fission.
Alternative energy sources are renewable, and is most commonly referred to as free energy sources. There are many alternative energy sources such as hydro power, solar power, wind, biomass, and geothermal. Using alternative sources is more expensive in the long run, but it is the much safer option for our environment compared to fossil fuels. Although everything used is completely free, such as water and wind, the equipment used to generate these things are expensive. There are several pros and cons that come with the utilization of alternative energy sources.
In today's world everyone uses energy to travel, to power houses, and to power daily items.
Geothermal energy is one of the oldest sources of energy. It is simply using and reusing (reusable energy) heat from the inside of the earth. Most of the geothermal energy comes from magma, molten or partially molten rock. Which is why most geothermal resources come from regions where there are active volcanoes. Hot springs, geysers, pools of boiling mud, and fumaroles are the most easily exploited sources. The ancient Romans used hot springs to heat baths and homes, and similar uses are still found in Iceland, Turkey, and Japan. The true source of geothermal energy is believed to come from radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth.
Energy can be put into two broad categories Renewable energy and none renewable energy. Renewable energy sources can be reused continually as they are abundantly found in nature. All of them are non-polluting but devices used to collect the energy may impact the environment adversely. They are free but producing storage equipment or converting them into another form of energy may be costly.
There are different kinds of resources that we can use in order to produce renewable energy. Solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power are just some of the kinds of renewable energy that might be the best options to obtain energy because they come from natural resources. Although renewable energy can be expensive to build, it has less environmental damage in comparison to non-renewable energy. Besides the natural resources such as sun, wind, water and hydrogen, we also have geothermal power, and biofuels as renewable sources.
Global warming is an extremely important and troubling aspect of the world’s current situation. This is due to the fact that the majority of the world’s energy production is from non-renewable energy sources, which are energy sources that either can not be naturally replenished or require thousands of years to be restored. Based on our current energy usage growth rates, there are an estimated 100 years left before our natural resource reserves are exhausted. (Non Renewable Natural Resources: How Much Is Left, Environmental Thinker) China alone consumes nearly as much coal as the combined usage of coal from the rest of the world. (US Energy Information Administration, China Consumes Nearly as Much Coal as the Rest of the World Combined) There is visible evidence of this happening with the increasing pollution levels. Carbon Dioxide and Methane pollution levels in the world reached a record high in 2012 and are 260% higher than the pre-industrial levels. (UN: CO2 Pollution Levels at a Record High, John Heilprin) Converting our world into a more renewable energy dependent society is the most advantageous and likely method for preserving our dwindling fossil fuel supply while also protecting the world that we call home.
