In this essay I am going to discuss the six steps of decision making that were considered and implemented by Gerry Bertier in the movie Remember the Titans.
Gerry acknowledged that there was a problem when he found out that Ray purposely did not block Rev, because he refused to conform to the integration of the team, which resulted in Rev having an injury bad enough that he could not play. His first acknowledgement was when he went to Coach Boone to tell him of the situation, the second acknowledgment happened when he went to Ray and told him he was off of the team
The alternatives to this situation could have either been for Gerry to turn a blind eye and act like he didn’t know what had happened or by addressing the situation and fixing it. …show more content…

Avoidance would also plant some suspicion in the minds of the African American players, making them think that one of their coaches are racist, or at least biased, in a way that would make Bertier look like he would let the Caucasian players do whatever they want while turning a blind eye to whatever matters to the African American players. This would be a problem that, with players that age, could lead to them either leaving or developing an attitude against the other players and their coaches. Addressing the situation would have made the person at fault responsible for what they did and made the rest of the team know that Gerry was there to take control and care for the entire team. This show of consideration towards the opposite race would not only reassure that the team’s family-like bond would stay strong, but in a way, it would improve this bond. This also would teach the very valuable lesson in action and consequence. The players would know that any bad action could, and usually would, end up bringing forth a consequence that would affect them
