We all make major choices in our lives that carry on with us till the day we take our last breath. For some people religion has a major impact on their lives and it shapes them into the person they are today. Religion is defined as “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs” (Dictionary.com). There are a bunch of different religions that are practiced with a lot of different beliefs, and when someone’s faith is strong enough, the foundation of their life is built around it. The decisions people make don’t always have a good effect on their lives. Everyone can choose whether or not to live by a certain faith, but for those who strongly believe in their religion, it will always have a positive and negative impact on their lives.
In the book “The Man Who Quit Money” by Mark Sundeen there is a man who is faced with a big contradiction. His whole life he believed in God, he was a major Christian and throughout his life he discovered that he was gay. This was a big deal for him because according to his religion, homosexuality was wrong. He started to think about what was real and what was not real and all of the impacts his religion had on his life. He also started to think about if there even was a god. When it comes down too it you can believe in your religion and be the way you are. Even though he is gay and started to doubt his beliefs, his religion help form him into the person he had grown in to.

...ween what is right and wrong you can start to think that there is something wrong with you. People can believe that they cannot be forgiven of a sin of going against their religion and it makes life hard to live when it’s something so serious like sexuality.
Religion has non-faultily become dangerous to many people as well. Some people fight over religions. The reason being is because some do not believe and others push their beliefs on to them and it makes a non-believer angry. When someone preaches their beliefs to everyone it can cause chaos because some people all so drawn to their religion they cannot even believe for one second that someone would not believe. Considering how many religions are in this world, there is no way every single person could possibly believe in the same religion, and as more religions are created this cycle will grow more and more.
In addition, religion affects culture in different ways, in positive and negative ways. Religion is helpful to our society because it gives a number of different ways to worship things we believe are good for us. Many people have their own beliefs, religion causes us to follow one that one religion that we think is right. Society in the United States allows for religions to respectfully practice what they believe or believe, which is ironic since some countries don't allow their people to pick the religion they wish to follow. However, religion affects culture in positive ways, there are also negative ways as well. Given that our country has so much freedom and beliefs to follow, that can cause for usual conflict. Some people believe they aren't getting fair treatment, and this can cause disturbance or trouble between certain denominations. Mostly these arguments are a result of ignorance on the part of people who are not open minded to ways different from their own. As long as people respect another’s beliefs, the positives can far outweigh the negatives.
Religion has greatly influenced western civilization. Religion is a way to express ourselves in our own way. To be able to choose who or what we believe in freely. This gives us a sense of individualism and helps our civilization to grow and develop each religion. Just about every ancient culture practiced religion in some way. They were either monotheist, polytheist, atheist, or believed in “magic”. Western civilization was impacted by religion in more ways than one. Every religion contributed in their own way. Some religions even worked together to help create a stronger, more structured civilization.
Throughout the course of history, man has looked to religion for answers. Curiosity as to how we got here and why we are have driven people to seek out answers to these somewhat unanswerable questions. Over the past few thousand years, several varying religions have been established, some more prominent than others. Many of them share a similar story of a divine creator who has always been and will always be. In the case of Christianity, whether true or not, it has proven to be beneficial to society as a whole. The Bible set the standard for the moral compass that humans live their lives by to this day. The key fundamental problem with religion, although not the fault of religion, is that man has often used it as a gateway to power and prominence. In the case of the 18th century Gallican church, the French were abusing their religious powers, thus creating vast inequality throughout France, which eventually led to a rebellion against the church, and the eventual destruction of the church within France.
Throughout the day’s observation, a plethora of sociological concepts become abundantly apparent. However, for the purpose of this paper, we will only focus on the day’s greatest prevalent concepts. The first concept that strikes as a significant sociological concept is family as it is the opening and closing concept of the day. Next, the concept of gender roles appears as important because of the masculine groups that are so prevalent during observation. Third, the theory of religion grabs its place in prevalence due to its ability to center and focus the entire day. Lastly, the concept of stage theory rears into the spot as a result of interactions in the work center. When reviewing these sociological concepts, it becomes abundantly clear
A person 's reality is conceptualized through the lens of religion. Any religion begins by teaching essential morals. These morals can tell a person what is "right" and what is "wrong," and should be foundational to an individual 's perception of social reality. A world without morals would be dangerous and cruel. The simplicity of right and wrong has also been factored into law, but even law doesn 't always have the highest moral intelligence. Religion has been at fault as well, resulting in death and destruction; shaping a person 's reality in different ways. Religious wars throughout history are an example of how two different groups of people of different religions have differed on their perspectives. People of religions that taught the same morals of "right" and "wrong" have had all out wars against each other. Both believing they were co...
The fact is that no matter where you turn, religion is a major part of culture and influences everyone on some level. While I don’t agree on any particular religion, it is important about learning what types there are in the world.
Religion is a symbolic representation of society. The sociological approach to religious belief looks at how society behaves on a whole, to answer the question, “Why are people religious?” We express our participation in religious events through plays, acts of confession, religious dances, etc. To begin to understand why we have such term, let’s understand the common elements of religion. There are different types in which people believe in or follow and that is: animatism, animism, ancestral spirits, god and goddesses, and minor supernatural beings. Beyond these different elements, such one is to have religious leaders to follow.
Granted the people seek religion for means of peace and conflict resolution, it is widely believed that misinterpretation of religion is one of the fundamental reasons for evolution of war all around the world. History proves this by innumerable war and evolution incidents, one of them occurring in what we call now Spain.
There are many social institutions that have major impacts on society. One of the trickiest social institutions would have to be, religion. Religion seems to have a huge impact on a society even if it’s directly or indirectly. Why is that? Do we need it? Does it let us live a more fulfilled life? What effects does it have on society? Is it necessary for a functioning society? According to Dalton Conley (2013:611) sociology defines religion as being a unified system of beliefs traditions, and practices around sacred things; a set of shared “stories” that guide belief and action. Religion is a way for people to make sense of the world, it keeps society in line with expected behaviors. Without religion people would subside to create their own rules and would deem to follow a path that could harm a society and come to an end. Religion is necessary for a society to function, prosper, and for someone to learn how to be a well moral contributor to society.
For many people, religion is a very touchy subject. For most, it is a personal decision; people choose a faith that aligns with their beliefs, ideas, and faiths. Although people would like to think that religion is a personal decision, and they can adapt it to how they feel and what they believe, in practice, that is not the case. Religion represents a commitment to a set of principles that are not moldable, adaptable, or flexible. Religion, although it may be a personal belief, it is extremely defined, with little to no room for flexibility. If people try to modify their religion to their own beliefs or ideas, the pushback can be severe. The lines in religion and faith as to what is acceptable and what is not acceptable are clear, and crossing them can bring serious consequences.
The Society Religion as a Social Glue The view in the title is a functionalist’s view. Durkheim claims that religion is to do with the sacred and certain things, people and places are perceived to be sacred for example Jesus Christ, totem and the Tajmahal. He claims that what people perceive to be sacred are actually symbols of a collective consciousness. By worshipping these sacred things etc. they are actually reinforcing the beliefs, values, norms and tradition which make social life possible.
In Introducing Philosophy of Religion, Chad Meister asserts “there are several components (that) seem to be central to the world religion: a system of beliefs, the breaking in of a transcendent reality, and human attitudes of ultimate concern, meaning and purpose” (Meister 6). Throughout my life, I feel that religion is one of the core social belief systems that people use to maintain what they feel is a good way to live. Giving them a sense of purpose or fulfillment during their earthly life, most hoping whatever beliefs that have will help them after death. Even though there are many different religions or religious value systems, everyone has most likely been exposed to one or more. There is only 15% of the world’s population that do not believe in one type of religion or another (Meister, 7).
It influences morality becoming a key component in an individual 's ideas of right and wrong. Although religion is arguably less important in people’s lives now than it was a few generations ago, it still continues to exert considerable influence on our beliefs, values, and behaviors. Coming from a very religious family was quite tough, not being able to focus on my problems and resolve them and tackling school. Attending high school religion for me after stop from going to church had stopped and had a complete downfall an a effect on my life. I was unable to keep faith in my life and began to give up on hope, changes, and everything else in life I was facing as being a high school student and as a child .As I began to graduate I realized all the stress, struggles, pain, and suffering I owed everything to god on not failing me and letting me down because better was coming.I began shortly after graduation attending church more even as a college student. I began to see a change in my life, focused, and able to let my problems go. I started back to adhere religion for the sake of my soul, and regular participation in faith-based activities because it good for the body and mind to become happier, wiser, and
Religions have always played a vital role between humans and its society especially in terms of what is good and proper in the society. In modern world, people have become increasingly dissociated from religion and spirituality.
Religion influences culture in many ways. People of different cultures have a set of beliefs that influence their daily lives and how they act. Religion is like a way of life. Many people take their religion very seriously, so their lives and cultures are majorly affected by their religion then and now. Religion has always had a major impact on human life and culture.
