Stowe’s character Miss Ophelia is the opinion of such Christians, as she believes that God will atone her sins solely because she is a Christian. Miss Ophelia uses religion in order to avoid addressing her bigoted opinion of African Americans: "I 've always had a prejudice against Negros […] and it 's a fact, I never could bear to have that child touch me; but, I didn 't think she knew it" (246) Miss Ophelia 's aversion toward African Americans shows that, like any human, she is flawed, but instead of trying to improve her flaw she assumes it will be forgiven. Ophelia’s beliefs enable these actions and allow her hate to grow as her only prerequisite for Heaven is for being a Christian rather than be a good Christian. Miss Ophelia is the embodiment of many white Americans of the period who believed that their maltreatment of African Americans was accepted by God, and easily forgiven without any change in their treatment of these
Religion always seems to play a large role in the formation of societies and cultures, and the history of the United States is no different from that of the rest of the world. Religion played a major role in the formation of the United States of America. More specifically between 1607 when American was first settled as British Colonies and the 1850’s. In the United States religion has indirectly caused two wars and been the reason for many reforms. Additionally, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which was one of the earliest colonies created, was started as a religious haven for the Puritans.
In many of these countries, religion came to be associated with education, which took on an increasingly important role thanks to the ideas introduced by the Enlightenment. As the world came to place a higher value on reason, logic, and learning, the presence of religion in conquered territories took on the dual purposes of converting and teaching the native people. This abuse of labor came to take on many forms between these two eras. What began as slave trade in the Americas was phased out by the mid 19th century.
They were able to fight for their love and family and face all odds against other people whose beliefs they did not agree with. Although, they faced a lot of obstacles they were able to make their dreams come true. Interracial marriage has been seen as a sinful act by many christian churches since the colonization of the United States. American churches continued to believe that Christian traditions forbid interracial unions. Richard and Mildred Loving fought against the law and changed it but they could not change the beliefs of people when referring to religion.
If we just took that stance and said that as Christians we shouldn’t go to war then our country and the world we live in would suffer. Let me get something straight right now before I go into this topic, I do not like war; I think it is an ugly thing, and I wish there would not be any more wars on this earth for the rest of its existence. But the fact of the matter is that there is war, there always was war and there will always be war until the second coming of Jesus Christ. War has become a way of life, it was not God’s original plan, but because of the entrance of sin into our universe, war was created. The first war we know of was a war in heaven between Satan and his angles and Jesus and His angels.
Christians should not be silent on social issues due to their size, moral compass and Gods activeness. They should not judge the lives of the people they know but gently criticize them while displaying Jesus’ love and acceptance. Social issues around the world personally affect many Christians. ‘All these issues and many others affect both Christians and those with no religious faith,’ about one third, ‘32% of the World population is Christian . So Christians should utilise their numbers and partake in social issues that directly concern them or issues which create, ‘the stirring of the love of God which cannot be contained,’ within them.
Is God a Christian? Godsey begins with his view of how Christians look at God. He states, “Christians often think and behave as though God were a Christian.” I believe that he may be right. When I self-reflect on my own Christian beliefs I do not always step back and think of the other religions inspired by God and his word. I believe, along with Godsey, that it is important to recognize and understand the religions that claim God as a significant figure.
These include the Mormons, or Church of the Latter-Day Saints. During this time churches were also organized into democratic societies with a common purse and they distributed money to missionaries in order to promote the gospel. Churches still believed that piety was necessary for a good government and that a good government was necessary for piety. The most important fact to not about this whole time period is that all people had an inherently christian worldview.
It strengthens our culture in a way of giving us a common belief and unified us. Religion can strengthen a community by helping in bringing its people closer together, for example, taking care of other members of your church. This can make the people in the community love themselves and by doing so, it would bring friendship among the people in the community. For example having religious teaching like Christians, Jewish, Muslims, and Judaism are all alternative schools could have to prevent confusion among parent and school (Etzioni 2008 page 67).
Taking the prospective as an outsider, it seems like she recognizes the vision as a Godly one, but then forgets all she has priorly discovered as a satanic craziness within herself. This to me seems to be going against what she has been trying to prove. In order to prove God’s presence on the next level, she gets guidance from a friend whom God put in her life. Even though Teresa is an authority figure and should be believed, she didn’t trust herself. I see her act of asking for advice from her confessor and saint friend, as adding more power to her reliability of her saying that God revealed himself in her visions.
