From literature review is clear, that currently applied management measures may not be sufficient to address problem of overexploitation and depletion of fisheries resources in Malaysia. The developed countries on the end of 20th century recognized that only traditional techniques of fisheries management to promote sustainable fisheries, that focus only on supply-side may not be suffiecient. Therefore, the partnership of industry and conservationists to achieve change in natural resource management took place in fisheries as new tool – eco-labeling system to let the demand side reward fisheries industry for responsible and sustainable management. The last 12 years have added to body of knowledge numerous empirical studies addressing eco-labeling of fish products. Specifically, the researches investigated consumers’ preferences and willingness to pay for eco-labeled seafood and seek to demostrate that eco-label on fish products have the power to influence consumers’ demand for eco-labeled fish products.

One of the first studies by Wessells, et al. (1999) surveyed 1 640 households using contingent choice survey to asses consumers’ possible acceptance of an eco-label for fish products, while consumers can choose between variety of labeled and unlabeled fish products. The authors found that species characteristic, consumer preference indicators like member of environmental organization, environmental magazine subscribers or fish purchase behavior, and gender are all significant to influence consumers to accept labelling program on the contrary to trust in certifying agency. The authors concluded that eco-labeling of fish may be capable of promoting sustainable fisheries, if adequate consumer education and market research take place.
