Leadership is an important role within the healthcare system, benefiting the interprofessional healthcare team and the registered nurses. AL-Dossary (2017) defines a leader as a person that other people will follow voluntarily or willingly. Leaders must also be educated on leadership, applying the skill in all aspects of their practice (Curtis, 2011). Leadership is a skill that is promoted within the Registered Nursing role, defined as the process of influencing others to help achieve goals (Huber, 2013). Leadership for a registered nurses should not be recognised as optional as it's essential that healthcare facilities and interprofessional teams have leadership for reaching high standards for patient care (Curtis, 2011). Through direction and guidance, a sense of stability is provided in a team, to help ensure effectiveness in work and satisfaction (Huber, 2013). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards help support this theory. Standard two of the Registered-nursing Standard highlights the importance of effective therapeutic and professional relationships. This standard correlates around trust, therapeutic and professional relationships, with the standard having similar characteristics as the description or idea of leadership. Such as section 2.4 stating that a Registered nurse " provides support and directs people to resources to optimise health-related decisions” (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017, Registered nurse standards for practice, Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships.) or section 2.8 where “participates in and/or leads collaborative practice” (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017, Registered nurse standards for practice, Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships.).
