I declared my major as Community Health in the spring of 2013. I am fortunate to be a member of the School of Public Health because I have learned vital information that have positively shaped my view of what healthcare should be focused on. The many health courses I have taken has enabled me to see the importance of having a patient centered care. My major has emphasized that instead of health professionals focusing on the illness of a person, they should try to address the holistic health or well-being of an individual. There were several program competencies that were addressed through the dozens of health classes I took at Maryland. In HLTH200, we discussed various examples of research methods such as experiments, surveys, questionnaires, case studies and observational studies. We also discussed different sampling methods and how it could either improve or weaken the external validity of a particular study. HLTH200 also taught me various descriptive statistics that are utilized to describe basic features of a data. Examples of such descriptive statistics include distribution, central tendency, variability, and correlation. HLTH300 and HLTH301 was also very vital in helping me fully understand how to apply statistics and research methods to examine the determinants of population health. In HLTH300, I learned how to utilize data to construct tables and figures such as pie chart, histogram, box and whiskers, and bar chart with error bars. By learning these skills, I was able to better interpret measures of a population health. In Epidemiology, we also utilized statistical measures in order to evaluate the distribution of a population health. Some topics that were discussed in this class included prevalence, immunizations and how it related to host and virulence, internal validity, and effect modification. Internal validity is important when examining the determinants of a population health because it encourages public health officials to consider whether there is an alternative explanation that could explain the phenomenon that is
