I open this notebook to first reflect on my microteaching session which, I hope, addressed some of the key points of arrival that strikes a balance between activity and receptivity. My goal was to show how learning occurs interactively and that it also plays out differently for each actor involved. That is, as we learned at the conclusion of my lesson, some students actively learn through reading while others may have a preference for listening. In light of this, instructors must consider how to reach the most students; and I believe teaching for the promotion of analytical engagement that may result in meaningful application of the material must centralize variety as a method. Below I focus on the following varieties: delivery medium, content type and format, repetition, and discipline. Also, not after applying but during the application process of these variations in teaching, measurement of learning can be determined through student demonstration. …show more content…
To achieve this, teachers should balance the medium through which information flows. Since, as Bean suggests, students learn best when they participate in learning, I think the best starting place for teaching a class is to ask explicitly what makes students the most comfortable in terms of learning and participating in class. Chances are the answers will vary with some students preferring class discussion, others enjoying small groups or delivering presentations. While less common, there will be students for whom reception matters. These are the students who learn by having something explained to them. Importantly, reception does not have to be inactive. For example, reception can involve peer-to-peer engagement, question and answer sessions, or writing to explain. By delivering material in a variety of ways, teachers can ensure learning occurs for the most number of
The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
Content area literacy, as with all learning, should directly relate to the students’ lives. When students can relate to a subject, they retain the information better and are more excited to learn. Relating subjects to students’ lives provides them with the desire to participate in the lesson and make connections with previous experiences. Lee (2014) wrote that “culture is the primary medium through which humans learn” (p. 10). Connecting the readings to students’ lives helps them activate their prior knowledge of culture and experience and allows them to transfer it to their learning.
Reflection is a crucial part to the learning process and is necessary for effective learning and teaching. As a student one must use the reflective practice to better understand the way one learns, as well as what was good and bad about previous work, in order to improve the quality of future work. The reflective practice from an educator’s perspective requires one to examine what was working and not working with lessons and the class. In both circumstances, reflection is a form of self-awareness. Learners that use the reflective practice are better able to understand themselves and the learning process. Being able to reflect can enrich ones learning and deeper ones achievements. Rogers observes, “Reflection on experience to action forms a large part of the learning process” (1996, p.109).
Reflection is a dynamic procedure whereby the expert can pick up a comprehension of how authentic, social, cultural and individual experiences have contributed to expert information and practice. I believe that reflective practice is a dynamic planned procedure of basically looking at practice where an individual is tested and empowered to embrace the procedure of self-inquiry to engage the specialist to acknowledge desirable and compelling practice within a reflexive winding of individual change.
After a summer internship at a news station that was in direct correlation with my declared undergraduate major, I am anxious to begin focusing my work and study toward higher education student affairs. My experience this summer forced me to do some self-evaluation and assessment as far as my strengths, weaknesses, and what kind of environment I envision myself thriving in. My vision for my career is ever developing.
After reading David’s story, I saw some similarities within myself. As a teenager, I often failed to complete things that I would start, often out of frustration. I never wanted to ask for extra help or an explanation given in a different manner. When I failed to understand something I would become frustrated and just not do it. I would often find myself, like David, dissatisfied with my work. I find that I over think a lot which results in creating a more difficult task then that which was set forth.
The knowledge within individuals continues to grow and develop throughout life. Reflection is the process of looking back on an incident while thinking and analyzing the result of different possibilities. An individual’s level of knowledge increases with the use of reflection because reflection enables individuals to identify their learning needs and to better their judgement based on previous experiences. This paper will describe a nursing student’s reflection on an event that occurred in the clinical setting. This paper will explain and explore how an experience changes one’s ways of knowing, including aesthetic knowing, personal knowing, empirical knowing, ethical knowing, reflexivity, as well as insights gained
‘No one can consider themselves a professional unless they are prepared to engage in reflective activities’.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
The dictionaries ' definition of learning and education is that learning is through experience, study, or by being taught, but education is through the systematic receiving of instruction. Over time, I have come to see that education sometimes is the same as learning. This, however, is a view I have always taken. I haven 't always viewed them as the same thing. For many years, I would stubbornly fight education, even though I love and have always loved learning, when told to do something I would become stubborn and make assignments ten times harder than it should have been. This struggle in my life greatly influenced not only how I view education and learning but also my assumptions and expectations with them.
Reflection learning is a very useful way which lead to greater self-awareness, which in turn is a first step to positive and effective change. Although it is a necessary stage in identifying areas for improvement and growth in both personal and professional contexts. Moreover reflection can help me as a student through increase my understand in my personal strengths and weaknesses which will help me to focuses on my strengths and try to avoid weaknesses. Also it help me to rate my performance which will help me later to develop my interview skills and also other skills and that development will improve my cv and my opportunities to get a high position.
As a student at the University of Southern Mississippi, I have learned the importance of reflecting on what I have learned. As a teacher, I believe that all students are teachable and that my teaching has a direct impact on their learning. I know that I will have some successful lessons and some ineffective lessons. Therefore, it is essential that I use reflective teaching. Reflective teaching means that I am constantly collecting, recording, and analyzing my strengths and weaknesses in the classroom. A good way of doing this is to create a teacher diary to write in regularly and/or create student surveys. So after student teaching for three weeks in a fifth grade classroom, I asked my students to complete a survey about my teaching skills. I told them that they did not have to write their names on the survey, so that they would be completely honest with their comments.
Everyone has a different view on how they learn and learning itself. First starting in EXP 105, my understanding of learning was new knowledge and becoming wiser. Taking EXP 105 has truly increased my knowledge of what learning is and the process of it. The most important thing I have learned about learning is that you observe the world around you, make sure it is understandable, and figure out the right way to respond. Learning also provides critical thinking skills. Everyone have different ways of learning and those ways are based on four different learning patterns. The four different types of learning patterns are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. Learning patterns are very helpful when it comes to everyday life, school work, and your job. Knowing your learning patterns and which ones you should use make
Reading several articles and looking at some YouTube videos related to reflective thinking, makes me think back when I first started teaching. Let me explain why:
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
