For this assignment, I attended a meeting hosted by Jessica Flowers for my Psychopharmacology course. Before the tutoring session began, my general expectation was that Jessica would assist me in making certain concepts more understandable. I also had the expectation that Jessica would not tell me the answers to difficult problems. Jessica met both of my original expectations and I left the tutoring session feeling more confident about the barbiturates chapter. Jessica demonstrated all of the traits that were listed in the Tutor Observation Checklist. She introduced herself to me and made sure that I had signed in before the session had begun. At the beginning of the session, Jessica asked me how my classes were going before inquiring if there was any specific topic I would like to cover. I explained that I was having trouble understanding the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of barbiturates. She explained to me that she was having the hardest time understanding barbiturates. The student pulled the quizzes up on Blackboard in order to show me which questions she had missed. Once I saw the questions the student had missed, I had her explain to me everything she knew about barbiturates. The student knew a great deal more than she originally thought. For the questions she had missed on the quiz, I had her look read the chapter in her textbook. Once she found the answers, I had the student explain to me in her own words, what the textbook was saying. At the end of the session, I encouraged the student to read the chapter more thoroughly and even take notes on important concepts. The student needs a heathy mix of assigned reading, and classroom help. This is vital, to the education of a student. He must be challenged to arrive at conclusions on his own, but also not left in the dark when he did not get what was asked of him. In the book Don’t Shoot, David Kennedy and his associates used a focused deterrence approach of policing. The first thing that goes into the focused deterrence approach is mapping out the crime that needs to be dealt with. Receiving 911 calls will help in mapping out the crimes you are looking for, and knowing where they are coming from in that particular city. We were to go over the answers from the previous night as it was homework but many of them had not completed it. We began on page 5, part 3 “Guided Instruction”. We read the passage and I had them underline the central idea and supporting details. We answered the corresponding question. Some students picked A, D, or C. I asked them to explain how they came about getting their answer, they responded. We did process of elimination and determined that C was the correct answer. I also had the students complete the writing portion of part 3, “Show your thinking” and time was given for them to answer the question independently. Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.

Writing an essay often seems to be an overwhelming task for many individuals. For students like myself, who came from another country, writing can be more difficult and challenging. It can be very frustrating to fully comprehend an idea, and being unable to express it proficiently in English can be excruciating. In my writing I have seen large amounts of growth, I have learned how to better introduce all my sources as well as how to flow my ideas, as well as how unnecessary the five-paragraph essay is. Wring has become easier for me due to the fact that I now I feel understand how to write. I understand that there must be a “they say” and an “I say” in my writing. There has to be an equal balance to everything I write. For example I cannot just write a piece all about my opinions as well how, I cannot just write a piece about what others are saying without explaining the purpose of it all. English 5A has helped me overly improve my writing skills and has shown me new very important skills on how to be a better writer.

This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
Reflection is a form of thinking, it affects what we say, how we act and feel and relates to our beliefs and values (Taylor, 2010). This essay looks at the professional term ‘reflective practice’, what it is and what is the significance of developmental professional skills in reflective practice. Throughout life, people whether consciously or unconsciously reflect on events daily. The process of reflection allows a person to take note of how they approach a situation, their thoughts, feelings during and after and what they can take from it. (Oelofsen, 2012).
As a first year student, college is an excellent opportunity to discover one’s own sense of identity and interact with a diverse range of people. Unfortunately, everyone will experience moments of confusion, loneliness, or even disengagement during their college years, which may cause a lack of interest for campus involvement. Through many studies, there are several theories that determine the parallelism between a student’s growth and their involvement interest, which also provides helpful methods for first year students to overcome challenges during this time. As Luckyday mentors this gives us insight to how to carefully approach different situations from mentees while forming a lasting impact on their transition from high school to college.

As an educator, there is always room for reflection and growth. Being in this class has provided an opportunity for both. From my knowledge gained in this class I believe that I have become smarter and have learned how to implement different tool into my teaching as well as general life as a teacher. Of the topics discussed in this class, commitment to students, avoiding burnout and reflective practices had the biggest impact on my professional growth.
