On November 17, 2015 at 7:30 pm, I attended the performance of Hamlet, originally written by Shakespeare, reimagined and directed by Wesley Broulik. This performance was performed by The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. I found this play very hard to understand as it was spoken as Shakespeare would write. It wasn’t until the middle of the show that I realized the school students were acting out the play for detention. This made it hard for me to figure out which actor was playing which role. Although I was confused throughout most of the play, I really admired the lights, set, and costumes designs.
My two favorite actors were Hamlet’s mother, and Hamlet’s friend with the sock puppet. Both were able to let the audience feel how much energy they were putting into their role. Hamlet’s mother didn’t care about what Hamlet thought of her marrying his uncle after his father passed. I feel like Hamlet’s mother did an amazing acting job. She wore a long black and pink dress. I feel like the main message of the play is to trust your instincts. Throughout the play, Hamlet is going back and forth between whether he believes the ghost is his father or not and what he should do. I also think the story was being told in third person. When information was revealed to a character, it was revealed to the audience too. I feel like this made the story of the play more exciting. The message of trusting your instincts was very important. The inciting incident in my mind was when Hamlet is first confronted with his father’s ghost who revealed the conflict of Hamlet’s father being murdered by his uncle so that his uncle can have the throne. The play meets the climax when everyone is dying in the end and Hamlet gets in a sword fight with his uncle. The conflict was resolved when Hamlet believes his father’s ghost and gives his uncle the poison to make things right by killing
