A have a very close family member that I struggle to communicate with. Due to the nature of this paper and respecting her privacy, I will simply call her Samantha. There are many problems in this relationship pertaining to communication that I will discuss in more detail later on. As a broad overview, I would say that there is no real communication. We can easily talk about irrelevant topics and politics but that is as far as it goes without resulting in anger, frustration and hurt feelings for us both. I have chosen Samantha for this very reason; we are opposites who have strong opinions and we don’t back down. I do not feel as though new communication skills will bring about a change in our relationship allowing us to better communicate, but rather it can provide me a skillset I can use to keep the relationship from breaking down completely. When looking at strategies to keep this relationship stable, it is imperative that I first understand the most common type of conflict that is occurring and what conflict management styles are most utilized. Then I can …show more content…
This is especially important when it comes to para-language ((the way we speak to others (Yolonda Williams. 2016)) and body language. When I am angry, it is very clear by the expression on my face and by the change in the rate of my speech and the pitch, tone and intonation of my voice. Samantha is the same. With both of us appearing hateful, it will be near impossible to withdraw from these conflicts. I have tried for a very long time to change these things about myself, but I have not been successful. The reason for this is simple: I know how she feels about me and I get hurt and angry. Hopefully I will be able to move past this in the future, but for now I need to just take a step back and do my best to avoid conflict whenever
I am a qualified solicitor and in this role I have developed my communication skills. On one occasion I was representing a mother who was a victim of domestic violence. The father wanted to see his children but the mother was not allowing it due to the domestic violence. I acknowledged her concerns regarding the contact and explained that I understood why she would not want contact to take place. I also explained to the mother the courts view in terms of contact and domestic violence cases. I highlighted the fact that if she allowed contact without going to hearing she would still retain a level of control. I suggested that contact take place at a neutral location and be supervised by a friend or family member until she was comfortable with this arrangement. The client was reluctant but highlighted that the court would want some form of contact and she would have to adhere to this. However, by reaching an agreement outside of court she is not bound by it and will be in control. The client agreed to

There is no doubt that conflict occurs in every human institution including professional, unions, and educational and vocational environment. However effective exchange ideas through communication can greatly minimize the effects of marital conflict. Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Interpersonal conflict is very common with many relationships. It occurs when two people can not meet in the middle or agree on a discussion. Cooperation is key to maintaining a healthy debate. More frequently; when dealing with members of your own family, issues arise that include conflict and resolution. During this process our true conflict management style appears “out of thin air”. (Steve A. Beebe, 2008, p. 191).
Communication is the establishment or a give-and-take of thoughts, ideas, emotions and understanding between a sender and a receiver. It is essential to building and maintaining relationships in the workplace. Some highly productive and dynamic organizations are distinctly different and striking due to their excellent skills in communication.
But, remember that verbal communication is not the only form of communication. Your nonverbal communication can say a lot to the receiver (i.e. body language. Use supportive messages rather than defensive ones to be more productive. Any conflict can be resolved through correct and effective communication.
On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. By recognizing their strengths, they are able to improve even further and use their ability to get them closer to goals they may have set for themselves. Recognizing their weaknesses is just as important if not more important.
If a conflict occurs and it’s not handled correctly, it can cause one or both of you to become defensive toward each other. If both parties have two different opinions, it can sometimes lead to a conflict which causes people to have a misunderstanding. It is better if you deal with the conflict in a positive way. According to the text, “Paying attention and modifying your behavior, checking your perceptions with other people, practicing effective listening skills, and using the skills of emotional intelligence can all be useful means of diminishing conflict” (Bevan & Sole, 2014). If you use these techniques they can help reduce interpersonal conflict from occurring. There really isn’t no way to avoid conflict, but you can change the way you communicate to solve the problems that you may face in your marriage. When you learn how to solve conflicts successfully it can help improve your relationship. You must develop a strategy in order to manage interpersonal conflict. If you want to avoid conflict due to perceiving things the wrong way, you must properly determine the genuine meaning behind the message before forming judgements. Your marriage can be filled with happiness, but there will be some disagreements. If a situation comes up before blowing it out of proportion you should first identify the
Effective communication is critical within the criminal justice setting. No records system can be effective without clearly communicating policies, directives, and procedures. Nor can an officer carry out a mission or survive without clear communications. Because communication involves the exchange of information between people (Wallace & Roberson, 2009) it is important to consider how people may perceive what is said or written in different situations. In this paper I will discuss the criminal justice setting, how they utilizes formal and informal channels of communication along with the use of verbal, non-verbal, communication. I will discuss the different barriers of communication, the difference of hearing and listening and how to overcome the barriers of communication in the criminal justice setting.

Witsel (2003) from the Southern Cross University advanced that teaching at tertiary or any level was rather uncomfortable even when the socioeconomic and cultural background of students are compatible with that of their teachers. Consequently, teachers have the added responsibility of motivating, assessing, negotiating, admonishing as well as teaching. The expert contends that these tasks force teachers to go beyond the call of duty by placing themselves in active relationships with students and the professional responsibilities they execute on a daily basis. Therefore, it becomes complicated when students appear in a classroom with various linguistic backgrounds, learning styles and expectations based on their socioeconomic and cultural development (Witsel, 2003).

It’s been said, “you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family” this quote is so true when it comes to family relationships you can’t choose them but you’re stuck with them for life. Things can often get tough and when family relationships get tense it can only make life a lot more difficult than what is necessary. My communication goal is to better improve my current relationship with my teenage brother, we have both have not been getting along lately as well as I would like (teenagers and their mood swings…) and I want to change that in a more effective way by using the skills I learned in interpersonal speech. In this paper I tried to complete my goal of improving and maintaing a solid relationship with my brother I applied perception checking, listening, and self-disclosure to better communicate and understand my brother. I used the concepts of self-disclosure, perception checking and responsive listening because those three concepts applied the closest to each situation. With each one I felt that I understood how exactly to communicate using them and that they fit in well with what was going on between my brother and I.
