Many students, throughout high school, are taught to write in a specific way. This included, writing five paragraphs, five sentences in each paragraph, and providing a thesis statement; which states the three points that you will discuss. The writing skills that high school teachers taught us were good, but not good enough for a college level English class. When I got to Nicholls, my professor, April Pejic, told me to forget everything I have ever learned about writing. She taught me that I should write with inquiry in mind. Writing with inquiry in mind means that you go beyond the typical five paragraphs and really elaborate on what the “big so what” is. When writing, many people have different styles of how they organize their papers. For instance, some students like to use a lot a figurative language in their essays to give the reader a better sense of what they are trying to express. One of my favorite essays that I wrote was about the helping process. I wanted to write about why the helping process was important and how people could benefit from it. I felt that I did a good job at luring the reader in with an anecdote. It described how a girl had gotten raped. I detailed it very well describing all the things that happened such as “He found her on the ground, knocked her unconscious, took her to an alley, and brutally raped her” (Helping 1). This showcased my ability to really make the reader interested in my topic and not bore them. It also showcased my vivid descriptions of the event so the reader could imagine it happening for themselves.
