This essay will reflect on the author’s learning experience and challenges to her journey of completing the high dependency care module. On reflection, the journey will be explored in which professional development is challenged and facilitated. In reflecting on these areas, the Driscoll's (2007) model of reflection will be utilized as this is very simple, straightforward yet suitable to any practitioner. As a college student I am faced with many situations throughout my daily life, while I believed I maintain a certain consistent personality through the process of this paper I was able to identify how my personality differed or stayed the same based on situations I was in. Through the course of this study, I was able to identify when five of what I feel are my most prominent personality traits were most prevalent and how they changed depending on the situation. The five personality traits I chose were humorous, imaginative, sarcastic, optimistic, and helpful. The situations I choose to look at were me in class, at work, with a friend, with family, and when I was alone studying.
Thirty years ago, (August 17, 1987), I enter the Dallas Accounting Center in Renaissance Tower ready to make my mark on the world as an Accountant I at Mobil Oil Corporation. Invited to interviewed with multiple departments, my eyes were set on working in the Joint Interest Accounting Group , affectionately known as the Country Club Group. When I showed up to work on Monday, my position was not in Joint Interest Accounting but just across the aisle in Audits & Receivables (Not the country club group!).
During my cardiology fellowship, I found myself deeply involved in the care of a 58 year old gentleman who was admitted with a very late presentation of a STEMI. The patient was found to have an ejection fraction of 20 % and he developed multiple episodes of ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation for which he was defibrillated and started on amiodarone and lidocaine. Confident of what current medicine had to offer, we tried everything but the patient became progressively worse. His condition however rapidly deteriorated over the next few days to the point where he had to be defibrillated every few minutes. He was finally transferred to another facility for an LVAD but unfortunately he died before the surgery could be performed. This and similar experiences have helped influence my growing passion to pursue electrophysiology as a subspecialty.
As I sit here and reflect on how my education and work life experiences have prepared me for my future in the workplace; I truly become overwhelmed by the amount of things that I have learned and experienced. Like many others these experiences has influenced, motivated, and driven me to make the choices I have made. The good, the bad and the ugliest of them all have helped me to become the person that I am today.
In general, I consider my greatest strength in the case study tutorials to be a confidence and willingness to contribute, which is certainly something I have struggled with in the past (during A levels, etc.). Having gained experience in group work and in leading a group project in my foundation year at Keele, I now find it far easier to speak up in these situations. I consider myself to generally be a very quiet person, so it has taken a lot of development to get to the point where I am able to speak out loudly and clearly. I am pleased with what I have achieved in this regard.
