Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
Over the past year I have grown as both a person and a writer. My writing has improved
Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood as a kid sanctioned me to perpetually become aware that I was different from my neighbors. Through some social interactions with my friends in elementary schools, I quickly descried that my appearances, such as my hair, eyes, and nose was different from my peers. For instance, my hair was a lot darker than most of my peers’ hair and the texture of my hair was different from most of them. “Grow out your hair” were phrases that lingered throughout my childhood days, where I had my hair at a very short length. Throughout my childhood, I longed to try to be a part of the dominant group in society such as the Caucasians, but I did not do anything to be a part of the bigger group in society. Instead,
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
The transition between a high school education environments to a college level environment, can be a challenge for a high percentage of first year students due to the disadvantages of each individual school systems focus on learning, and the determination of the student themselves. It requires an individual to adjust from the focus of a teacher centered learning to include learner centered environments together in a whole, improve the communication between the student and professor; compared to a student and high school teacher’s lack of communication, and to improve strategies to combine their time management with each individual course into their outside lives. When going through the quick paced transition from high school, institute, and then to a college, I have found that each
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Going into college is a transition for many students, some are excited yet terrified, and others are dreading stepping into the intimidating college halls. Many enter dumbfounded as they now have to decide what to do and where to begin. Most people realize they cannot depend on p...
Ever since I started talking this class, English 1301, with Dr. Piercy, I have been able to expand my writing and thinking skills. Not only was I able to make more better essays but I also learned important topics such as how education creates an impact in the world. In this essay I will be talking about three writings and how they are related to this course semester. The three writings are “On Bullshit” by Harry Frankfurt, “Why I Write Bad” by Milo Beckman, and “Statement of Teaching Philosophy” by Stephen Booth. How are these 3 writings related to this semester’s course work?
It is said that the college experience is not for everyone. That not everyone can achieve the high expectations of everything that encompasses the requirements that are needed to successfully complete the work required. When I first started college I felt like I was one of the ones that did not belong, but as I struggled through each class I slowly learned that the possibilities for me to succeed where there. By looking over my previous essays, this essay will examine and help express how I have achieved what was required of me in this class.
College will require a great degree of self motivation and personal responsibility from the student. It would be great if during the primary stages of the college introduction the student took inventory of several personal traits that can impact their learning. A student should also be able to honestly assess his or her strengths and weaknesses. Awareness of shortcomings will arm the student with the ability to enhance them. Having awareness of strengths can help the student further develop their strong areas. Parallel to becoming aware of strengths and weaknesses, is becoming aware of one’s dominant style of learning. Chapter 2 introduces the concept of different learning styles, but encourages the student take personal responsibility for their education by adjusting to the env...
As my first year in college ends, I write to you seniors who are getting ready for the adventure ahead of you guys called college. College is what everyone has told you about and more. These years aren’t just about excelling academically, but also defining yourself as a person. My college journey in this last year has been amazing and along the way I’ve had obstacles to confront from getting my first low grade to sleeping through an important class. But the most unexpected obstacle I’ve experienced is the transition to college.
At first, college life was very tough for me inside and outside of the classroom. Inside the classroom, I had to learn how to manage my test anxiety, take better notes, and focus more and not be as distracted. I learned how to manage my test anxiety and take better notes. Outside of the class room, I had to learn how to study effectively, do my homework every day, keep up with deadlines, manage my time wisely, and avoid procrastination. I learned how to overcome these challenges by learning from my mistakes and by being determined to succeed.
Throughout this English 280 course I have learned many things about reading, writing, research, and critical thinking. I have also learned about what potentials I have as a writer and what I can improve when writing. In this process I had also encountered some difficulties when it came to writing. At the same time I also feel that the difficulties I encountered have made me improve from my first essay to my recent essay when it came to the genre, process of writing and the rhetorical language used when writing. Even though my progress was not at all constant I still was able to earned satisfactory grades and learn more with each assignment. I still feel that I need to improve my writing and reading because I will need to use it for future courses, life events and career.
In the college success strategies (COLL 101) class, we had explored various areas of future possibility. Throughout the quarter, We sketched out the big pictures of the future. We identified potential destination and explored the path to get there. In this reflection essay, I would like to talk about and reflect on personal development throughout the quarter.
Seeing the finish line on the horizon has motivated me to pass this course and graduate from Austin Community College. To get to this point I was willing to sacrifice my financial stability in order to earn high grades and complete an associate program. In addition to this I’m now willing to also change my studying habits and how I spend my time. Although I’ve learned a fair amount of strategies to being successful in college there is still much more that I have to learn. Writing this paper has given me the opportunity to view my purpose as a student differently. I have realized that attending college has much more to give than financial stability. It is an opportunity to discover who you are as a person. This class has given me the confidence I need to continue on this journey. Overall I’m very optimistic for what’s in store for my
