Summary
The topic for today’s reading was the Importance of Early Identification. In one of the assigned readings, Barbera Introduction, presented that 3-5 percent (e.g., Birnbeauer, 1976; Snell, 1987) or 6-9 percent (e.g., Klob, 1973) of American’s children have some types of disorder, such as learning disabilities, and eating disorders. The most difficult disorders to treat of the many childhood disorders identified in the American Psychiatrist Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual are mental retardation and pervasive developmental disorders like autism. These disorders are life-long ad require an intensive treatment due to the significant intellectual, social, linguistic, physical impairments that have on the individual to treat. Furthermore, an early intervention is critical for working with children who have some severe difficulties with language, socializing or communicating because treatment programs are more effective when started at early age.
