I chose weight loss as my personal wellness assignment. My goal was to lose 10 pounds by the end of class and within 12 months be at healthy weight. I started my journey at 266 pounds. Based on my height I should be between 147 and 183 pounds, but I am trying to get down to 210 pounds. My reasons for losing weight were my blood pressure was spiking at times and my A1C level was at 5.4. My doctor said by losing weight I could cut my risk for high blood pressure and lower my A1C to prevent diabetes. My biggest motivation is my 3 year old daughter. She deserves to have both parents in her life as long as possible. I was motivated because I now had a reason to my weight loss and goals and a short term goal. I started out strong and was going to the gym every day and doing strength training. This is my journey documenting my struggles, how I got back on the right road, and my results. …show more content…
For others like myself, it is a struggle each day. I was raised up eating some meals that were healthy, but most of them were unhealthy. Working, having children, and maintaining a household are tasks most adults do daily. There are days we get home early and days we get home late. Due to hectic schedules we eat out, or cook quick meals loaded with fat and high amounts of sodium. There are many reasons that these things happen such as; healthy foods are more expensive, unhealthy foods taste better, and let’s face it, there are a million other places we would rather be than working
As someone who is in charge of the wellness program here at UIW, my job is to oversee all the aspects and find out what needs amending or implementation. There are six dimensions of wellness and each one has their benefits. The purpose is to take a look at each dimension of wellness and try to make some improvements for the staff and students.
In order to best serve the community’s health needs, it is vital to assess who would most benefit from increased care coordination and improvement changes. Preventative health information will be most beneficial and applicable to vulnerable populations such as disabled pediatrics and their families. Disabled and chronically ill children and their families often require multiple services, providers, and resources. Examples of children and families with multiple needs which would benefit from the preventative health improvement plan include a child who, has been newly diagnosed, has a progressive condition, or which is being cared for by a parent who demonstrates a lack of knowledge. This community preventative health project may also promote health outcomes for individuals with chronic diseases such as
Healthy People 2020 have a number of goals such as having the community attaining high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death to all health groups with equality and without disparities; Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) is contributing to these goals through community medicine. Access to primary health care is getting harder every day (epically with low income populations) due to a number of reasons including; a decreasing number of physicians choosing primary care as their specialty and the cost of care. Without access to primary care the community cannot achieve the Health People 2020 goals, APN’s fills this void through a number of avenues from the private sector to the public sector while providing affordable healthcare.
There are many different determinants of health and wellbeing as previously discussed. However, these determinants do not act alone but, they all intersect. These means multiple factors determine an individual’s health. I will now explain how age, gender, social status and communities can all affect health but, there are also other factors, such as race and ethnicity, that intersect to determine a person’s health.
Healthy People 2020 is a program for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010. According to healthypeople.gov, this program has four overarching goals which are first to achieve healthy, longer lives free of preventable diseases, injuries, and premature deaths; to achieve health fairness, eliminate differences, and improve all groups’ health; also to produce social and physical environments that encourage good health; and last but not least to promote life’s quality, healthy development, and healthy behaviors through all life stages. This program has a vision of a community where people live long, healthy lives. Healthy People 2020 offers a comprehensive set of 10 years of nationwide goals and objectives that is meant to improve the health of the American population. Healthy People 2020 covers 42 topic areas with approximately 600 objectives, which include 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, has been designated to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them, this objectives are called Leading Health Indicators. The program goes above and beyond these health indicators in order to provide the best care for the people of this country. These indictors cover from the access of health service, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity to substance abuse, environmental quality, injury and violence.
Health psychology has been an appealing subject to me because it is relatable on many levels. Of the topics we have covered in class I think unit 3 have left the deepest impression. Stress is something everyone can relate to but probably understood on the minimum. Stress is a common experience for university students and without an exception I fall victim to it every time an exam or presentation comes up. Learning about this topic, what stress is, what it does to your body, how it affects your behavior has lead me to reflect upon past experiences in a way that I can learn to better cope with the effects of stress.
Keeping up a healthy lifestyle can be very difficult. Between work, school, and life in general, people barely have time to eat three meals a day. A lot of people struggle to incorporate healthy eating and physical activity in their daily routines. People forget that if they take care of themselves, it might help make their day a bit better. A healthy lifestyle is a very important part of living a better life.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.

Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a healthy life style is challenging and stressful but it shouldn't be that way. Starting off slow and allowing your body to get accustomed to such changes will help you enjoy yourself more with these new changes. Changing one dish you eat to something healthy is a great start. Keeping yourself happy while putting healthy foods into your body or exercising will further your success. I’ve come to realize that your outlook on things will effect how much effort you put into it. Keeping yourself active and motivated is crucial to such a change. Making schedules or goals for yourself weekly and trying to fulfill those goals will help you accomplish more. If you manage to fulfill each of those goals, allow yourself one of you're favorite cheat foods. This assessment project has been very beneficial to achieving and living a healthier lifestyle. This project allowed me to gain valuable insight to what I consume and how it affects my body. One thing I never really worried about throughout my life is my diet. Every since I was young I’ve always had a rather fast metabolism. Many people would consider me to be fortunate because it’s a blessing to have, but however I feel like it’s also been seen as a curse. Throughout my life gaining weight was a difficult challenge. I would have to consume about 6-8,00 calories daily just to maintain weight. No matter what I did I could never gain weight. This is until I was in the Marines. It was physically and mentally demanding. In addition to that with the help of my fellow Marines in weightlifting I went from being a scrawny 125lbs kid at age of 18 to a more solid 190lbs at the age of 23. It took a lot
Any individual that leads a healthy lifestyle will say that healthy living is more than just a fad or goal, it’s a way of life. Changing certain aspects of one’s current lifestyle to become healthier is not the final goal, rather, the objective of setting these short and long term goals is maintenance. Therefore, I choose to change an aspect of my current lifestyle that I felt would facilitate the improvement of my health and would later become a change that I can maintain over the course of my life; I choose to increase the amount of water I drink per day to improve my inner bodily health. I decided on this change because I feel that setting a smaller goal that I could easily monitor and execute will expedite future changes to my lifestyle,
