Reflective Teacher
When I started college, I took a first-year class that was about my identity and who I was and how I can reflect on my experiences in life to gain a better meaning. My professor always made us do reflective essays about our past, but at first I did not know how to do it and I did not know what she meant by “being reflective.” When I was having a problem with the assignment, she decided to talk to the class about how to be reflective. She started with a quote from Deepak Chopra that says, “the highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and reflective - people who know to see a problem as an opportunity” (Chopra, n.d.). Yes, my professor was teaching us how to be reflective, but I believe that she was helping develop my skills in order to become a reflective teacher. In the article, Becoming a Reflective Teacher, it says that, “reflection allows teachers to make effective, meaningful decisions about how to respond to and plan for children” (Carter, Cividanes, Curtis, & Lebo). When you are teaching, something that worked last year or even yesterday might not work again today, so it is important that teachers are reflective in order to make the “effective, meaningful decisions” that will guide the way that they are teaching something to the students. Working in the preschool setting has been a fantastic learning opportunity for me. I went into the preschool with zero desire of working with preschool aged children. However, I had the best time getting to know the children, working with the students, and playing fun games and activities with them. I love working with children and I do believe that I am capable of teaching children. While in the preschool I created and implemented a couple of different lesson plans and I had some success with them, but also some failures as well. I see that my Classroom Management needs work and that I need reflect more on the lesson plans that I create in order to include more literacy development. During both of my lessons, we did an interactive read aloud, we engaged in rich teacher talk and had discussions with the students.
