Service-Learning Reflection Paper
Over the last semester, working with the Burnett County Health Department has allowed me to grow in my professional field as well as in my personal life. Allowing me with opportunities to work with the community and better their overall health status.
Understanding our project is important in learning the significance of our service here at Burnett County health department. Over the last few months, we have discovered many statistics that are beneficial to understanding the health status in Burnett County, WI. Prior to our work, previous students collected a survey regarding health issues in Burnett. This information was then relayed to our clinical group. After we placed the data into an excel spreadsheet

The largest contributor would be leadership skills. While enrolled in my nursing leadership systems classes, we have unraveled how to overcome conflicts in the healthcare field along with in the everyday setting. Putting my classroom knowledge into the field setting has made it easier for me to understand, overall increasing my comprehension of leadership skills. Another aspect that was enhanced by working on this project was the understanding of social status on the health of the community. Over the course of nursing school, we have learned that the less income a family has, the less resources that are able to be provided. I have never completely understood this concept until I witnessed it first hand in Burnett County, WI. This county is one of the poorest in the state of Wisconsin, decreasing their options for food, health, and housing. This puts a strain on their health, leaving their community at higher risk for increased health issues such as the three addressed in our …show more content…
Working with another county has been challenging, requiring us to communicate through technology such as emails and phone calls. However, this was not the only issue. During our time with Burnett County, job openings were becoming available resulting in changes in our contact personnel and the healthy Burnett team. This caused confusion with our contract, leading to a miscommunication between the new leaders and my nursing team. With the knowledge of our leadership skills, we were able to overcome this communication barrier and determine future expectations of our group with the Healthy Burnett
Health problem can affect the individuals’ quality of life and well-being. It is imperative to identify the key indicators of health and contributing factors in the community. This will enable the community to create an appropriate interventions, and essential actions to address health problems in a population. For this particular assignment, I chose Harwood Heights, Illinois to gather data and identify the major health problems and the contributing factors that the community is suffering from. According to Presence Resurrection Medical Center (2013), the leading causes of deaths in Harwood Heights are heart disease, and diabetes. Likewise, overweight or obesity, alcohol abuse, and tobacco use are an obvious concern in the community. A finding

The intent of this paper is to analyze interviews with a staff nurse and a nurse manager. The interview questions revolve around what the nurses perceive as the main communication issues at work. More specifically, the communication issues with patient communication, communication with colleagues and communication with leadership/administration. This paper will also list three actions that would improve communication in response to the issues raised during the interviews.
For many decades, Americans’ health has been greatly impacted by many social, economic and environmental determinants (Plough, 2015). These social, economic, and environmental determinants include income, education, ethnicity, natural and built environment. These factors create the health disparities in the health care system. The culture of health has changed over the last several generations. Health is viewed as not just needing to seek health care, but rather to recognize all aspects of people’s lives that support an active and healthy lifestyle and environment. The aspects can be their work, families and comminutes (Plough, 2015).
Over the last six years, I have really looked up to my clinic director, or the “big boss.” It didn’t take too long after I started working to realize that I wanted to be in her position one day. She is the best example of using interpersonal communication in the workplace. “Health communication encompasses the study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health” (Healthy People). There are many forms of communication strategies that one can use in a healthcare environment when dealing with different challenges and also in gaining skills. Healthcare is much more than being a caretaker and/or a caregiver. Aside from the all the doctors, nurses, and medical staff, there are receptionists, medical records, finance, coders, and various other administrative roles throughout a healthcare organi...
It is sobering to compare the Franklin County data to state and national statistics. Almost all of the demographic information highlights that our community is less healthy when compared to the state and the
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
The topic of what happens to those that have, "never heard the good news of Jesus Christ" weighs extremely heavy on my heart. I work with Atheist, Muslim, Hindu and Pluralist in the technology field. Frequently I am attacked just for being a Christian. For a while it was scary to know that I have become a minority in my own country. Some how each time I am attacked I love these guys that much more. My Hindu friend really knew nothing about Jesus before he met me. At lunch one day he asked me about Christianity and I was able to share with him the good news. But for some reason he rebeled and believes the Bible is, "the greatest book of fiction ever created." If not for the revelation God provided about His Word in my second year of Bible school, I probably would be a pluralist myself. I really want everyone I share Jesus with to go to heaven and it use to be tempting to think God might make an exception. However, there is only
It is important to be aware of issues in the community that the nurse resides or works in to better care for the residents. The first community health problem is the low median household income. According to City-Data, Circleville’s median income is $10,000 less that the Ohio average (2015). Families with lower incomes may be less likely to see a doctor for preventive care, afford important medications, and are more likely to be overweight or obese (Bennett, Probst, & Pumkam, 2011). The second issue apparent in the epidemiologic data is the high prevalence of deaths from heart disease (City-Data, 2015). Many of the risk factors for heart disease can be prevented; such as, a high-fat diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, and smoking. The last community health problem is lung cancer. The community nurse should be performing screenings to find those at a higher risk for lung cancer, as well as educating the community on smoking
My mission is to utilize the knowledge and skills I learned through my MPH graduate studies to make a difference in the public health field. I am passionate about engagement with disadvantaged and marginalized populations to learn about their needs and assets,
As a future healthcare leader, I will start by collecting data on the health of the community that my organization serves. I will develop a five-step program to contribute to public health efforts within my organization. My five-step program towards public health will involve monitoring, diagnosing and investigating, informing and educating, partnering, and researching. I will monitor the health indicators of my community and be aware of health needs and disparities. I will seek to identify hazards through research and analysis and diagnose root causes. Once root causes are recognized, improvement is possible. It is
Following graduation from Biomedical Science and Health Science, to increase my exposure to the health care system I began working at a medical clinic. This is where I saw the real examples of public health. Homeless patients who required medications covered by the provincial drug plan had a difficult time accessing health care as rarely did they have a family physician, thus having to wait hours in a
My initial reaction to the icon presentation had me feeling sceptical and slightly anxious. Sharing something that held such significant sentimental value to me and my family was not something I had had the chance to do in any other class over the course of my university career. This pedagogical approach in which the teacher is situated at the front of class, educating other students with no written language, is very powerful. I find that listening to someone share something with you, without notes, and speaking purely from their heart, is one of the most powerful ways to receive, understand and process information, but more importantly, learn.
When one looks at their life, at any stage in which they live, it is pivotal to see clearly how they are finding meaning, purpose and direction within their daily decisions. As I’ve learned to value the role of community and covenant relationships in my life, it has been a challenge to continually commit myself to overcoming my flesh and correctly align myself with God’s intentions for my life. As part of this transformative process in centering my worldview on Christ’s love, I’ve concluded that all of life’s ultimate questions are found to have been correctly answered in the Bible; repeatedly in Scripture, and specifically in one verse, I have found that it sources everything in life to the glory of God. Romans 11:36 centers our attention on Christ, from whom we derive all answers to origins, meaning, morality, destiny and identity for our lives: “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (ESV).” Not only does the most credible book ever written support this thesis, but in “Making Sense of your World,” it is strongly communicated that “God alone is the ultimate reality and everything else is derived from him (Phillips, Brown, Stonestreet, 2008, p. 44).”
Violence is an inherent part of human nature and American society is not exempt from this basic instinct. American land was settled with violence; the American colonies formed through violent acts; the United States of America was founded with violence; and we continue our independence through the violence of warfare. Violence is found in every aspect of life from entertainment to war. As a civilized society we try to counter-act our violent nature, but it remains at the core of our existence.
