Indeed, I admit that my experience in my clinical internship is much different in my industrial setting. I experienced the world of unemployed and employed people. I experienced to look for a job, pass resume, being interviewed and waiting for a call from a company. I admit that it’s really hard and tiring to look for a job. After all the struggles, I received a call from the company where I want to get in and spend my internship. I got accepted to work and do my internship at Philippine Airlines, for me I take this as an opportunity since I really want to work in airlines. I worked at Philippine Airlines for almost a month. They made me feel like I am a real employee in the company. One of the employees in our department provides a learning session for an intern. He taught us some of the rules that we need to do while we were in the division. He answers some of the questions that we want to know that are related in the company. For me, this learning session was very helpful while I am working because it provides me a better understanding of my job as an intern. It gives me so much information regarding the policies and my responsibilities.
I must say that this experience was stressing yet so productive. I have learned so many things even it’s just less than for a month staying here. I learned to value my time efficiently. As what I observed from the employees in my department, they are very passionate to their work and they do not waste time. For two semesters of my junior year, I interned at Huntsville Hospital, shadowing nurses and technicians in many different areas of the hospital, including the emergency room and cardiovascular units. Oddly enough, I liked giving obese, old patients bed baths, helping them to the bathroom, and cleaning their bed pans. But, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t exactly what I loved doing, but I knew it was part of the job, and I willingly did the dirty work. By the end of my junior year, I knew I loved the hospital environment and wanted to eventually work there; however, I just didn’t know in what capacity.
Medical interns are surgical residents working to become doctors, so their jobs are very complicated and specific, which may have conflicts along the way such as competition between workers and an overloaded schedule. By completing so many hours and being at various locations, I made many business contacts that will last me a lifetime. Each and every physical therapy setting I experienced was different, which gave me many viewpoints of the physical therapy career. The physical therapists and physical therapy assistants I met offered a new perspective into their career and daily life, which helped me decide on the direction I want to take my career. I believe that without going to my internships, I would not know that I want to work in sports medicine or that I do not want to work in a hospital setting. My job was mainly assisting activity coordinators. As an extra set of hands, intermediate tasks were taken care of much quicker. The impact it had was chiefly that the residents were able to enjoy the activities and had to spend less time waiting for assistance. Many residents seemed generally appreciative simply by having a new face helping them out.
For my externship I worked at Heshima, a center takeing care of physically and mentally challenged children, for 20 hours. The highlights of my experience were; successfully getting into the organization blindly, being able to work alongside the Heshima employees and watching Nelly, the headmistress’s way of doing things. She, being the head of the school used a method of leadership I had not seen before.
In the hospital, I've got to be in touch with real patients and I even got to treat them. I would ask the patients how they are doing and give them some water if they needed it. The staff also gave me a green light and allowed me to talk to patients and connect to them freely. When you talk to the patients, you can really learn a lot from them. .This experience benefited me because I was exposed to the real world and real world problems. The hospital experience also opened my heart as some of the patients were in terrible condition. It made me realize how fortunate I am and also made me grateful for all the blessings in my life. The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. I was privileged enough to get the opportunity to be a tax intern with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Atlanta, GA this spring. The beginning of my internship experience was a little different from the others because I was able to go to the National Championship in Arizona with an organization on campus. I was quite hesitant to ask for the time off because I was just an intern and I wanted to make the best impression possible. I emailed the manager that I interviewed with and after a week, he was able to get back to me with the firm’s policy. If an employee’s alma mater makes it to the national championship they are eligible for two days off. I am not sure if I would have asked if the manager had not been an alumni from the University of Alabama.
