Reflection Paper On Biological Sex

Based on this video I learned that biological sex is determined by the genetic make up of a chromosome. I also learned that in the early stages of pregnancy the only way you can tell the sex of a baby prior to eighteen weeks of pregnancy and prior to the formation of the genitals is through a test that looks at the baby’s chromosomes. According to this movie if the fetus will become a boy there is a gene called SRY that will be activated later on in the sixth week of pregnancy. This gene will only function once in a lifetime and will trigger the gonads to excrete testosterone. If this happens the sex of the baby will be a boy. If this gene is not triggered then the fetus sex will be a female.

However, I do believe that the benefit is that the child can truly be themselves and not feel that they have to suppress and hide their true identity.
I don’t feel that you should be obligated to have to answer if your child is a boy or a girl. This is a personal question and if you do not want to answer it you shouldn’t have to. Nevertheless, if you feel that you have to label your child as either a boy or a girl I would look at their genitals and see what they resemble most or find out what their chromosomes are and then raise the child according to that.

After watching the trailer for the film “Diagnosing Difference” I feel that many of these transgendered individuals feel that society views them as having a gender identity disorder. Throughout this clip these individuals all state that they do not have a mental disorder and do not feel that they should be labeled as such. I agree with them since I do not feel this is a choice and believe that this is something you are just born with. They aren’t hurting themselves or anyone else for that matter so they should be able to present how they want to free of judgment. However, within society it is not always that easy and many transgendered individuals face issues of violence, workplace discrimination, homelessness, oppression, privacy, justice and equality
