For the first paper of the semester we were given the task of writing a visual paper. This was the first time I had ever written a visual paper and I believe that I did a pretty good job on it. One thing that I learned about this type of paper was that there is no real right or wrong way to write it. The point of a visual paper is to share with everyone what the paper means to you. When I revised it for the first time I added more detail about what I think the photographer was trying to say rather than just what I thought about it. For my second piece we were given the task of writing a position or report. I chose to write a report for a few different reasons. The first reason is that I was not as familiar with writing a report so I wanted …show more content…
I chose to write a proposal piece because it is a type of paper that I often struggled with when I was in high school. I picked the topic of students cramming for finals because it is something that is important to me. I believe that students often do poorly on exams because they do not know the correct way to study which often causes them to do poorly on the exams. A struggle that I had with this paper was what information was important to support my thoughts. I solved this problem by going to the writing center for help and they were able to point me in the right direction. I believe I improved in my writing throughout these three essays and believe that I have achieved all of my wiring goals and then some. Some of my favorite class activities that we had this semester would have to be when we would share our writing. Even though it was for me sometimes to open up and share my wirxing with people that I hardly knew. I also enjoyed how we wrote these three papers, though the whole semester. Even though it was hard at times, it is nice now to look back and see how much my writing has improved this …show more content…
I responded to every open ended question that was posted on D2l and when it came to peer editing I was able to edit everyone’s work and gave helpful advice when it came to helping people improve their papers so they are the best they can be. Some of my strengths when it came to group work is that I am a good leader in groups. I am able to keep everyone focused on a common goal. A struggle that I have then it comes to group projects is that I sometimes have a hard time trusting everyone to do their work. This is a small fault of mine is sometimes caused me to worry about other people’s part of the project. I believe that I did well when it came to class participation and group
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
Over the past year I have grown as both a person and a writer. My writing has improved
When it came to the process of writing my first, second, and third essay’s, there was clear visual improvement that I have become a better writer in certain aspects. As for essay one, I tended to rely on my writing skills as a high school student rather than use the components of a successful college student essay. This was definite once I received the feedback given by ...
Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood as a kid sanctioned me to perpetually become aware that I was different from my neighbors. Through some social interactions with my friends in elementary schools, I quickly descried that my appearances, such as my hair, eyes, and nose was different from my peers. For instance, my hair was a lot darker than most of my peers’ hair and the texture of my hair was different from most of them. “Grow out your hair” were phrases that lingered throughout my childhood days, where I had my hair at a very short length. Throughout my childhood, I longed to try to be a part of the dominant group in society such as the Caucasians, but I did not do anything to be a part of the bigger group in society. Instead,
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Ever since I started talking this class, English 1301, with Dr. Piercy, I have been able to expand my writing and thinking skills. Not only was I able to make more better essays but I also learned important topics such as how education creates an impact in the world. In this essay I will be talking about three writings and how they are related to this course semester. The three writings are “On Bullshit” by Harry Frankfurt, “Why I Write Bad” by Milo Beckman, and “Statement of Teaching Philosophy” by Stephen Booth. How are these 3 writings related to this semester’s course work?
Writing an essay often seems to be an overwhelming task for many individuals. For students like myself, who came from another country, writing can be more difficult and challenging. It can be very frustrating to fully comprehend an idea, and being unable to express it proficiently in English can be excruciating. For these reasons, assistance is often needed to become an effective writer. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the process on how I organized and accomplished my most recent essay, and to identify the struggles I encountered when writing the paper. In addition, plans on how to improve my next paper, based on the teacher’s feedback from my previous essay, and topics including methods on how instructors can help develop my essay
I knew from the beginning that writing was one of my major weaknesses. With each paper or revision my ability to express my thoughts, ideas, and knowledge into words has grown tremendously. One of
Before I began the semester, writing papers were not my strong suit. I really did not enjoy writing because I believed it to be a difficult process. More specifically beginning a paper was extremely difficult for me. It was tough to start a paper and put my ideas in an orderly fashion to compose a decent paper. While practicing with writing techniques, I found that listing my thoughts helped me. Prewriting gave me the chance to gather all of my ideas and begin my papers quicker. I
The first graded essay that was assigned to us were to choose between two stories “Hills like White Elephant” by Ernest Hemingway and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and interpret the story in our own
Over the course of the semester, my writing developed from elementary level into an undergraduate college student’s. I was able to overcome many weaknesses and learn the proper ways on effectively writing a paper. The given writing assignments became the symbol for my “practice makes perfect (in my case improvement).
The narration paper we wrote at the beginning of the semester was an eye opener to me. When the assignment was first given I remember thinking it was going to be easy. I choose to write about the impact juvenile detention center had on me. I wanted to focus on the positive aspects of my experience in a juvenile detention center. I struggled to get my point across because I focused too much on why I was there instead of my experiences. My writing skills improved from this paper was my sentence structure.
My journey through high school as a writer has been quite fruitful. I have refined many of weaknesses, including organizations and introductions, and am still perfectly some as I go, like time management and conclusions. I learned that there is no such thing as a perfect paper; there is always room for improvement in my writing skills. Also, I have learned to see my writing through different perspectives and portray abstract concepts in my work. In the years to come, I hope to learn even more from my instructors and develop a unique writing
Before this class, I never thought I was a good writer. I never put much thought or effort into any type of English work. I was always good at answering short answer response questions because I got my point across in a timely fashion. Reading wasn’t my strong point, so over this past semester I have point a huge emphasis on my reading and writing skills, hoping that before I headed off to college I would learn these crucial parts of English. I took this class to improve my writing, reading, grammar, and thinking skills to become a better all around student. College English has done a great job of getting me ready for the real deal college classes. I now understand what it takes to write a good college level paper, and how much work and effort I have to put forth to reach my goals in life.
