Generational Characteristics: A Journey through History

Each generation throughout the span of time has defining characteristics, from the Baby Boomers to the Millennials, we each have experienced different things that shaped who we are. How different the world would be without televisions, computers, or even cell phones and we still relied on the radio to transmit information? While change has been necessary to keep up with cultural and social demands, it is always important to reflect on everything that has happened to each generation to get society to where it is today. Paugh History Hall in the Museum of the Rockies reminded me of just that. While wandering in the hall, I came to an exhibit of a house. I looked through a window to see a bedroom, it was very simplistic. Up against two walls, there was a bed with plain white sheets on it and against the other wall there was a dresser. Everything in the bedroom was really simple, yet detailed in beauty. There wasn’t a lot of room for clothing storage, so I’m assuming most of it was stored within the dresser. Clothing is such a huge part of our culture nowadays, it is weird for me to think that some people in our society have multiple closets while back then, everyone’s clothes in the house were stored in a single dresser with five drawers. This stage suggests that adults are searching for intimacy and love. The fact that this is the phase of your early to mid-twenties it seems appropriate for those to search for love during this stage. Erikson believed that many people made the assumption “that they will find their identity in a relationship” (Bjorklund, 2015). Back then and even now, it seems that people date with the intent of finding themselves. This might be why the divorce rate keeps climbing. Therefore, like Erikson’s stages explain, you have to be aware of your identity before you allow your life to become united to someone
