Reflection Paper

This semester I am in a fifth grade classroom at Stafford Elementary School. We have been working on long division. Specifically for my clinical report I taught a lesson having to do with division that focused on “Interpreting the remainder”. This lesson is from the GoMath Math program that Stafford Public Schools has adopted for this school year (Lesson 2.7: Interpret the Remainder, 2015). At the start of the lesson most students struggled with finding out exactly what the questions were asking. This influneced how they would answer the question. By the end of the lesson most students learned to read the question carefully and answer that question, which often went past just doing the division problem. Some students struggled with reducing as my student at a higher mathematical level and D. W. as my student at a lower mathematical level. Although, Z. D.’s score went down from the pre-test his work showed that he learned from the lesson. He only lost points on providing his answers in simplest form, meaning he needs practice on reducing fractions. I chose D.W. because he is struggling in the class but did show improvement from pre to post test. The interview questions and responses are below for Z.D. & D.W.:
Interview Question Higher Student: Z.D. Lower Student: D.W.
(This student is currently in the process of being tested for Special Education) What is one thing that you learned from lesson 2.7? “I learned that the remainder can be a fraction not just a whole number.” “The lesson reminded me how to write the fraction.” What is something you were confused on? Why? “I learned how to simplify the fraction.” “I learned how to make the remainder as a fraction.” What is one thing you still need to work on with interpreting the remainder? “Division. Doing the actual division correctly.” “Nothing.” How do you feel about division? Is it easy or hard for you? “It can be tricky sometimes.” “Easy.” How do you feel about fractions? It is easy or hard for you? “They are easy to work with.”
