Some people have a talent for writing and can just write an amazing five page essay with ease, but I am not one of those people. I have always liked writing, but the quality of the writings were not always the best. I knew what I wanted to write, but when I would try to I would cram so much information into my writings that my readers would get lost and not understand what the essay would even be about. That all changed, though last year. My junior year was when my writing changed tremendously. During my freshmen and sophomore year we did not write much, and if we did the teacher did not really care about the quality of it, just as long as some words filled a page.Therefore, I had learned how to just throw stuff together and repeat myself, …show more content…
The teacher was one of the best teachers I have ever had and I am lucky to have her this year as my Psychology teacher. She is the major reason why my writing has improved. There were different things she taught me, like how to slow down, declutter my essays, improve my sentences, and to not stress out over an assignment. The first paper I wrote for her was a research paper and it was about “If exercise can help people with depression.” Once again, I tried to cram so much information that she got lost and could not figure out what the main idea of the paper was. She liked what my paper was about, but she did not like the way that I wrote it. The teacher would give us a week to work on an essay and the first day I would say to myself, “Oh, I have a whole week to work on that, I do not need to start now, I got plenty of time.” But after saying that for five days, time catches up with you. I was the master of procrastination, but I learned that procrastination does not work and it will really drive a person crazy .Last year I decided that I was not going to do that anymore, if I could help it. Let us just say that helped a lot with my writing, because I was not just throwing stuff together. If I planned ahead of time I could think about my topic, what I was writing, and how I was writing. Out of the three attempts to squash my tendency to procrastinate, only one seemed to work. The first thing I tried that worked, was to set a timer for 10 minutes, and just work for those 10 minutes. Next, I would give myself a 10 minute break. This was an idea suggested by my professor at the beginning of the year. This worked at first; I would get into my writing mojo, and not stop for an hour or so.
English composition has always been a weak point for me. I despised the thought of having to write down my thoughts on paper in a manner that was appropriate for my teachers. English 1301 introduced me to a new tool to soothe those crazy thoughts through stream of conscious writing. At first I was very skeptical, but it proved to be valuable in understanding that I had more knowledge of the topic of discussion than was realized. Although that tool helped tremendously, it did nothing to quell the quality of my procrastination skills. In high school, I completed most of my homework at the last minute. Coming into college, that clearly could no longer be the case but it still stuck. One concept that utilized my procrastination skills to my advantage was peer review. Peer review forced me to write all of my essays ahead of time in order to make the grade. Not only did it help with my procrastination, it also gave me lots of feedback on my writing. During the narrative essay draft one, I was given a lot of revisionary advice, and that was due to the fact that I wrote the paper at the last minute. Knowing that, when it came time to write the argumentative essay I spent more time actually putting better grammar and diction into my essay because I did not want my peers to think any less of me academically. Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.

For the forty odd pages we wrote for this class, I feel that the overall achievement was getting practice. I wasn’t required to write many papers in high school so for me the constant writing was helpful for me. I can really tell a difference in the way that I write now from the way that I wrote at the start of this year. The best way to procrastinate is to interact with other people. That way you can lay part of the blame on someone else: "Well, Mom was talking to me about something important. I couldn't just walk away." I prefer to talk on the phone to friends who go to schools far away. We usually don't talk too often, so when we do, we have to make it count. For those that who don't want to spend a mountain of money on phone bills, any kind of messaging system on the Internet is a great way to communicate.
Do not procrastinate. Choose a task and start working on it. Delaying a task will only make it that much hard to get started. Commit yourself to working on the task for a specific amount of time each day until it is completed.

Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. Frank Partnoy shows historical views on procrastination, in an article about his book, such as how “The Greeks and Romans generally regarded procrastination highly. The wisest leaders embraced procrastination and would basically sit around and think and not do anything unless they absolutely had to” (Gambino 2012). Those Romans and Greeks were able to enjoy their time of relaxation, using procrastination as a healthy tool rather than a bad habit. Even wise leaders used it! Writing is like showing magic tricks to me because the audiences don’t know what will happen. As a freshmen coming to college, something that I have to get used to that no one will inform me if I didn’t do my homework, or I skipped class. I didn’t expect much from any of my classes. In the beginning of the quarter my main goal for EWRT 211 is that I wanted to learn how to write better. Most of the essays I wrote in high school didn’t receive high scores. In EWRT 211 I learned many things, but the most important thing that I learned was how to write essays. Writing essays is not something that you can do in one day. You have to go through many steps to get the result that you want. For instance, in order to get a high score for your essay you shouldn’t write the essay the night before it is due. I remember English class in high school and I thought it would be the same information so this class would just be a review and the hardest assignment would be to write a one page essay. I thought I could write any paper and make a A on it. As the time went by I realize this was not true. I started working on my attitude towards the class, what I learned and my weakness.
The writing class session I observed is a packaged program in which the students have been participating in for 5 months. They all know the routine of the reading and writing workshop and understand “the Daily 5.” The student’s movements are purposeful and there is little time wasted in transitions. The books used by students become more complicated as the students ability strengthens. At the end of the workshop, Mrs. Rammond praised those students who used their time efficiently during “the Daily 5.” She spoke directly to the students who wrote in their journals and asked them to share their entries. The students learned some new trivia about insects, practiced writing and then had some time for art.
