1. Please reflect on your attitudes toward sleep? Do you regard sleep with high importance? Do you feel it is a waste of time? Do you fall somewhere in between? Please explain. In my daily life, I do not regard sleep with high importance. I am aware that I do not sleep enough and it is a trend I have been aiming to alter for some time now. I first tried coffee about three years ago when I was fourteen years old. Since then, I have made this form of caffeine my solution to suppress my need for sleep. I enjoy being busy and constantly occupied which is why I indulge in stimulants. I have always been a procrastinator which I know is the cause for my lack of sleep. I have experienced first hand that practicing a new math concept, that I was initially exposed to earlier in the day, before I got to bed does not aid me being able to recall the lesson the next day in class. As Foster explains in the video, it makes performing certain tasks and carrying out functions that require mental stimulation much harder for a tired mind. I was able to make a connection between this theory and Foster’s point that a lack of sleep results in an increased stress level. In the theory that we sleep to maintain a level of brain functioning and processing, Foster poses that sleep deprivation impacts our ability to develop solutions to complex problems. I have had countless sleepless nights and I do not think twice about how sleep deprivation can affect me in the long run. One critical question that came up for me regarding mental illness and sleep was, over what time span of regular minimal sleep will an individual acquire a mental illness? Although it is comforting to know that stabilizing sleep can make someone healthier and relieve the symptoms of a mental illness once diagnosed but I would like to research and understand what level of sleep disruption eventually causes a cerebral
