The classroom demonstration was helpful in regards to what was expected because we were not just thrown into the situation blindly. I felt more prepared in my practice simulation because of the classroom demonstration. The demonstration in class showed me how to approach patients with cultural differences. For example, it showed me what types of questions to ask and ways to suggest things without completely shutting off their cultural ideations etc. Additionally, the LEARN evaluation tool really helped me to systemically “gather information” about the patient (Avino, 2013). It was also a great tool to look back at and see which areas needed improvement and which ones I felt comfortable addressing already.
Speaking from a personal standpoint,

The first lab that I had with my partner I emphasized the need for patient education. The patient stated that she did not understand the meaning of hypertension, or what exactly caused it. As I went further to explain the meaning or cause of the disease, I lost engagement with my patient due to the use of big medical words. At the end of the discussion, the patient was still left unclear about her disease. From this simulation I learned that it is important to gauge the patient’s health literacy. Many times we as nurse tend to forget that we use a “special language” that is not familiar to an average person. With this, we had to use the explain portion of the LEARN model to make sure that she was clearly informed about her illness. Through the next two labs, I realized the importance of communicating effectively, and using vocabulary that is well understood by the …show more content…
With this lab, I think I can improve on picking up more on social or ethnic cues. For example, in lab 2, the patient avoided eye contact whenever we mentioned her husband and this is something that I should have further discussed with the patient. I believed that was the patient’s way of addressing a problem between her and the husband. In the future, I will be sure to address the issues thoroughly so that the best care is provided to the patient.
The third lab emphasized vulnerable populations and disability. From this lab, I needed improvement with listening better to the patient’s needs (since they are unique to the disability they may have). Our patient told us that at times we asked too many repetitive questions. In future labs, I will avoid asking repetitive questions and listen to the patient carefully the first time he addresses his concerns. Continuing to improve these things will help create a more comfortable, and a safer environment for the
In conclusion, I found the lab session very informative and helpful in completing the Denison Hospital case assignment. It was particularly helpful in inputting the formula equations into the excel spreadsheet in order to answer the requirement questions of each section within the case study. Therefore, I look forward to future lab sessions on the assignments for Stratton Township Park and City of

...ing a communications requirement for all of their nursing and pre-med students. It would not only encourage the students to have better “people skills,” but it would increase the communication and relationships between patients and their caretakers. This increased communication would lead to happier patients and better recoveries both physically and mentally. Humans have emotions, and those emotions must be tended to.
I have developed a newfound confidence in myself that kills and professional competency. My interactions with patients and assertiveness in myself and to carry out a professional discussion and interventions. enhanced not only his communicative skills but as well as immediate reporting, analytical skills and extensive knowledge of the internal and external workplace. Further, becoming involved with committees helped him understand policy and the external situation, as well as government, councils, and regulation, and the way in which to administer the protocols around the plant and people. I have developed a successful rapport with patients, staff and external personnel. I once carried this apprehension and nervousness in patient interactions,
Although the experience was nerve-racking, I believe that I did a very good job. I was able to collect the majority of the information that she was telling me while asking follow up questions. However, it was more to balance than I had expected. It was difficult asking questions and attempting to record enough information to complete my assignment. As the conversation continued, I got interested in her life stories and professional examples and noticed I had stopped taking notes. I also felt the need to make constant eye contact to show I was alert and aware of what she was saying, which brought challenges to my note taking. This interview process made me feel excited for the future. It was an intriguing opportunity to know that one day I will be able to positively impact lives the way Fultz does. To improve my interview skills, I would ask if I could record the conversation. This will allow me to interact more with the health professional while also consuming a maximum amount of information. I wish I had thought about recording this conversation prior to the interview, because Fultz spoke beautifully about her passion as a social worker, and I wish I was able to directly quote her in this
I used all three aspects, survey, observations, and interviews, of field research. I created a survey sheet with 26 questions, including a Likert scale. I then made 100 copies of this survey and handed it out to the general public including those in my school environment and neighborhood. A large amount of questions consisted of people’s opinion of animal testing for a majority of purposes such as cosmetic, medical, and learning purposes. I also gathered the demographic of the people I surveyed including their age, gender, and highest level of education. In addition, I observed three videos on animal testing to familiarize myself with how the environment actually looks and what type of tests they conduct. Through this part of my research, I saw horrid conditions I wish I could un-see. Although, if I had never observed this atmosphere, then I would have never known what truly goes on within the laboratories. I had found the interviews to be the most intriguing part of this study, which I organized through email. I wanted to know what opinions the people who fought and campaigned against animal testing had. Furthermore, I wanted to...
Any learning that occurs should focus on treatments, tests, and minimizing pain and discomfort as they improve they can shift their focus of learning (Kitchie, 2014, p.127). I will continue to provide a meeting location that is both comfortable and private. In the emotional aspect of M.M. and her family I will try to identify moments when members feel emotionally supported as it sets the stage for a teachable moment (Miller & Nigolian, 2011, p.56). I will also discuss with each member their previous coping strategies that used that have been successful and to encourage them to find a way to build on and strengthen these qualities. Using teaching methods that are interactive and allow patients equal contributions and participation can help promote health compliance (Habel, 2005,

The nurse recognized the patient’s strengths and weaknesses, his being his lack of understanding English, while promoting participation in a teaching/learning plan. First the nurse assesses the patient to figure out not only what needs to be taught, but also how the patient will best understand the information. The nurse assessed the patient’s sensory abilities (vision, hearing and tactile sensation), cognitive functions, and literacy level to evaluate in order to teach cognitive and psychomotor skills and to set realistic goals with the patient. She made sure that there is enough light, and no distractions in the teaching session. The nurse sits in the level of the patient while teaching and allow face to face interaction, and speak slowly with small
I feel is very important to be aware of the counter-transference, transference and boundaries issues around the treatment area. Knowing how to address these issues to the patient is also very important, this is something I have to work on.
Explain who the patient is (Race, Ethnicity, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Age/ Generations, Socioeconomic Status, Language, and Religion) and describe a situation in which a nursing professional must navigate an encounter that is affected by his/her own biases.
Another good learning experience was being able to navigate and document in the patient’s chart with the computer system Power Chart. It has helped me gather information about what areas need focused on when completing a comprehensive assessment on my patient. I got to read assessments of various healthcare providers. Also safety, as the computer prompt me during medication administration to help prevent any errors.
Has it ever crossed your mind what it would be like to be a laboratory animal? Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in U.S labs every year. You've most likely heard of animal testing but perhaps aren't completely sure what it is. Animal testing is the experimentation carried out on animals used to "assess the safety and effectiveness of everything from medication to cosmetics, as well as understanding how the human body works." However, there is more that goes on behind the scenes throughout these experimentations. Overall, it is more often than not cruel, produces inaccurate results, is immoral, and should be banned; allow me to elaborate.
I am now more comfortable playing roles such as the initiator and recorder. Furthermore, I now know the scope of practice of professionals like occupational therapist, physical therapists and social workers. Attending the Help Save Stan simulation also had a positive impact on my learning. In the ‘Simena’ simulation, I saw a resident who was experiencing difficulty in communicating with a patient, due to his belief that the patient was drunk and dependent on pain medication. From this scenario, I was able to identify the need for professionals to listen to patients without making assumptions because patients are the expert of their own symptoms and have all the key data (Warren, 2015). Again, in the ‘Say what’ simulation, I was able to identify how communication affects patient safety. In this scenario, I received a change of shift report with some vital details missing. Since safe clinical handover is a requirement for safe patient care, the use of structured communication tools, such as SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) will provide a framework for providing key information (Guadine & Lamb,
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
