This learning opportunity reflection was based on the genetic category. In this learning opportunity I investigated a case study created by G3C the Global Genetics and Genomics Community. I reviewed a patient case, preformed a questionnaire assessment, and made recommendations for future evaluation based on genetic testing. In total I spent about two hours completing my learning opportunity and the reflection assignment. I chose this material because doing an interactive case study sounded interesting. I learn better when my full attention is on a topic and I need to respond and complete activities in order to complete it.
This learning opportunity is important to my learning in nursing because often times in nursing, we don’t talk much about genetics and the hereditary effects of some diseases. It is often an overlooked topic in our curriculum. This activity helped me think of ways to talk about genetic testing with patients and discus their results. Not only did this activity teach me the importance of preforming a in-depth assessment of family history and current lifestyle choices, but it taught me ways to prioritize these findings and make a clinical judgment. While in my patient’s case, she found that she had a heightened risk for cardiovascular disease after genetic testing, after digging deeper, I was able to find that her father had cardiovascular disease and that she smoked cigarettes for five years. These facts are important to take into consideration and weigh out their contribution to future testing. LG stated that her family stays well educated regarding their health and family history and if they have any questions about the genetic problems in the family, they will typically research the internet and follow up with their general practitioner. LG, her siblings, and their mother are in good health and are not dealing with major medical matters at this time. Interventions for this family should be tailored to help them keep up on current information about heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, which are the main medical issues in their family medical history, and having a plan that ensures they continue getting regular health checkups. In conclusion, it is important for nurses to have proper training and information in the area of genetics and genomics so that it can be used in daily clinical practice (Thompson & Brooks, 2011). Using this information with clients and conducting a detailed genetic nursing assessment is a valuable component of being an effective health care provider and can help clients recognize, prevent, and/or treat diseases that are unique to their particular family.

My nursing experience and application of nursing theory is still relatively young. I attended Georgia Southwestern for my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from which I graduated in 2016. Prior to this I obtained my CNA license in high school which was my first introduction to patients. It was at this point that I decided that I wanted to provide quality compassionate and the best medical treatment possible to people. It is the ability to blend information and make decisions that will later be implemented in the situation. Evidence-based decision making involves choosing from a variety of possibilities and combining the knowledge through research and the scientific evaluation of one’s practice. The purpose of this paper is to analyze my decision of administering ativan by advocating for the patient and anticipating her change prior to confirming signs; which provided a therapeutic response.

There are many reflective models that I could have used, including Johns (2004), Driscoll (2000), Atkins and Murphy (1994), Kolb’s (1984), and Gibbs (1988). I decided to utilize the Gibbs (1988) model as a framework, because it focuses on different aspects of an experience and allows the learner to revisit the event fully. By contemplating it thus, I am able to appreciate it and be guided to where future development work is required.

The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. Genetic screening is the sequencing of human DNA in order to discover genetic differences, anomalies, or mutations that may prove pathological. As genetic screening becomes more advanced and easily accessible, it presents society with difficult questions that must be asked about the boundaries of science and to what degree we are allowed to tamper with the human genome. To better understand the potential impact of genetic screening on our society, we must examine the potential benefits in comparison to the possible negative impact it may cause. With this knowledge in hand, we can examine what the future holds for this field of study and the best possible direction to take.
I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
To me, being a nurse requires a great sense of selflessness and courage to devote your time and being to helping others. Nurses work long hours and experience straining situations for the satisfaction and fulfillment of helping others. More specifically, experiencing life and death, as well as applying your full self--emotions, knowledge, courage, and strength--takes a toil on the mind and body, but the innate satisfaction, human connections, and experiences I would be able to live through prevails over any thought of stress.
