Critical reflection paper
I have chosen to reflect on an incident that happened in Unit 4A at Pasqua hospital. Involving my-self, a group of nurses on team 2 and a patient. We had just started the day with the usual gathering of nurses for the morning report. It was my first time meeting this particular nurse and within 5 minutes of hearing her talk about all the patients on our team I already got a bad impression about her; based on how negatively she spoke about the patients on our team. She first started off by telling the group how terrible all the patients were during the night shift, as if there state of health was a burden on her. This scope of nursing describes how nurses see themselves and how others view the profession of nurses. Every nurse has a reason why they became a nurse, we all have different journeys and paths that has brought us under one profession. However, I believe nurses and nursing students have to continually ask themselves why they choose this profession. No matter the journey of this particular nurse at the end of the day her end goal was not focused towards an ideal of administering ‘patient centered care’. The smug look on the night shift nurse’s face made me question why she was a nurse, because her words didn’t seem like it pointed was not centered towards the care of this elderly patient. As public figures, the public expects nurses to provide care for patients in their time of need. The expectation of the population and the way we view our selves should both be uniformly moving towards the same direction. This experience overall has made me reflect on what I think of myself and what is expected of me as a future RN. I have realized the importance of always ensuring my individuality also complements the essential values and morals I have to uphold as a nurse. This way of living goes beyond the walls of a hospital. Rather, it is a lifestyle I must maintain. As I progress through my studies as a student nurse I have to remember that nursing is not just a job but a way of
