On Education Based on my own experiences, the purpose of the educational process is to prepare an individuals mind and skills to succeed in the future. The educational process commences from pre-k to graduate school, which is inclined to be helpful to the students in their future. Both, Sherman Alexie and Hsun Tzu reflect their views on the educational process including positive and negative effects in the life of a disadvantaged Native American child and in the terms stated as the “Gentleman” and the “Pettyman”. I had taken the medical assisting course when I was a junior and a senior in high school, and by the end of the two years of the program I earned my medical assisting certification and had nothing but encouragement from my teacher, my parents and also from the friends I made along the way. Unlike, Sherman Alexie who is described as a disadvantaged Native American child, that was not encouraged to learn or put forth effort on his schoolwork. According to Sherman Alexie and his other classmates “Were just Indian children who were expected to be stupid…They struggled with basic reading in school but could remember how to sing a few dozen powwow songs” ( Alexie 17). Alexie refused to fail even if there wasn 't any encouragement because he knew in the future his education will be depended upon. To emphasize Alexie’s view he kept reiterating “read” fourteen times, which was to emphasize the fact that he learned how to read and write when most of his classmates did not, which made him feel empowered. Reading was important and Alexie figured since his father loved books he would love books as well. “ Our house was filled with books. They were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedrooms, and living room” (Alexie 16). I agree with the educational process because the only way to become successful in life is to never give up. The value of education is important because every year there are new developments on ways to help the students learn more beneficially and succeeding. An environment where students are encouraged and show they “Understand” the things they have learned, will allow them to have the mindset that will give them success in their goals. Hsun Tzu and Sherman Alexie expressed their ideas about education in various different forms as stated. These writers showed how important education is and how many directions and paths you can take to succeed, but the best thing you should do is focus on one path and put your effort into it. The way you succeed is by going above an beyond the standard in order to reach where you want to be. Without any encouragement besides having his father that loved books Alexie was able to teach himself how to read and write, so if someone with little help can do it anyone can. What is the purpose of education? A question that has been asked for centuries and defined in many ways; each theorist will argue their views on education is unsurpassed, yet it remains a question, that the future of our children depends upon. My personal philosophy of education is to create an environment that allows every child the freedom and ability to discover, create and pursue their interests; ultimately becoming the best they can, for an evolving and unpredictable future. Within this framework, the purpose being to encourage learning through children’s interests, by personalising education for the individual and interlacing subjects to engage and entice learning. While discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will explain the aim of education, consider the role of the teacher and the learner and present effective teaching methods and practices for within the classroom. This essay will demonstrate that Dewey, Friedman, Neill, Noddings, Robinson, and Zhao, support my personal philosophy and prove in contrast with the theories of Skinner and Rousseau.
Dewey once said:” Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself “(Scholastic n.d., online). The sentiment expressed in this quotation, embodies my own view and believes. Education is the process by which human beings acquire the values, knowledge, experience and ways of behaving, allowing them to function in life. It starts the day you are born, until the last day of your life. It even begins before birth, in the mother’s womb. The baby receives stimuli from the mother, the father and the environment. Education happens throughout our lives and it happens formally (School, College, University, etc.) as well as informally (Developed in the community, the church and other institutions of society).
Education is in itself a concept, which has changed over the millennia, can mean different things and has had differing purposes according to time and culture. Education may take place anywhere, is not constrained by bricks and mortar, delivery mechanisms or legislative requirements. Carr (2003. p19) even states, “education does not necessarily involve teaching”. Education, by one definition, is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life (education, n.d.).
Education means a variety of things to any individual because it is the route to fulfilling dreams that one would not have otherwise been able to believe was possible. Just as food provides nourishment to the stomach, happiness satisfaction to the soul, education is the dietary supplement to the brain. Education endows one with the strength and motivation to have a dream, as a consequence one is able to lead a life filled with happiness. One is able to have contentment because with the attainment of an educated mind they are cognizant that they can achieve all of what they have ever imagined. As children we are taught to dream what we want to become and as an adolescent, we are able to live to become just as what we have imagined. The very essence of what we seek to become is educated in a sense because we can only become a step closer to making our reality come into existence without beginning with education.
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
Education has different perspectives and meanings for most. Education is known as the process of receiving methodical instruction especially in institutions such as high schools or colleges. Education rightfully benefits an individual’s ability to explore a deeper literate meaning while also helping avoid societal embarrassment. Some see the general aspect of education as a measure of socioeconomic status while others perceive education as a tool of knowledgeable attainment. Regardless of the many different faces education possesses all combine to create the concept that education serves as a medium to producing a learning society.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. Education mean something different for everyone. Because of this, people have different views for the purpose of education. For some education can be very important and for others no so much. However, education is still present in some ways. Education is used for many things like advancing in the work place and helping out country compete against other countries. The role that education plays in improving the lives of students is by creating democratic citizens; this happens by promoting imagination and the desire to care in classrooms.
The reasons we educate our children have changed over time. However, some of the core values remain the same. One of the most important purposes of schooling is the transmission of a culture from one generation to the next. Furthermore, and according to Coombs and Ahmed 1974, education is a continuing process, spanning the years from earliest infancy through adulthood and necessarily involving a great variety of methods and sources. Education also involves inculcating in students distinct bits of knowledge; therefore education is an additive process (White, 2006). It adds to an individual as well as it adds to a country through the individuals who are and would have been or are being educated. According to a study conducted by Olaniyan and Okemakinde 2008, education creates improved citizens and helps to upgrade the general standard of living in a society. Furthermore, education plays a key role in the ability of a developing country to absorb modern technology and to develop the capacity for self-sustaining growth and development (Todaro and Smith, 2012).
Through education, so many doors open for us to become leaders in the world. Education does not necessarily have to be through schooling, it can also be a form experience. As humans, we learn on a daily basis, everything that we comprehend we are able to use to make the best out of it. Education is a huge factor to consider when making a choice in my own life.
