Reflection Of Writing: The Steps In The Writing Process

The writing process involves steps needed for individuals to become successful writers. The steps addressed throughout the writing process are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing (p. 365). Individuals use these steps to help create, manage, and bring to life their piece of work. However, research suggests that these steps are demonstrated in a specific order during the writing process; many writers tend to “move across and back and forth” during the writing process (p. 365). For this writing task, I chose to write a diamante poem. I chose this poem because of its simplicity and directness. However, I found during the prewriting process the directness and specifications needed for a diamante poem, were harder to pull together than I had expected. First, I struggled to decide on a topic. To begin revision of the poem I focused on the (6+1 traits) which consist of ideas, sentence fluency, word choice, organization, voice, and conventions. These tools help writers brainstorm, examine vocabulary, and address issues with their work.

The specifications for the diamante are that three “ing” words need to describe each noun in the poem. As I began my search, I hit a road block and was unable to come up with “ing” words off the top of my head. Therefore, I went straight to the thesaurus to find “ing” words that would display the meaning I was looking for correctly. Once again, during the revision process in a peer collaboration session, it was pointed out that a couple of the words that I chose still did not represent the “showing” method that I needed to achieve.
