By participating and leading a section during the ropes course, I was able to practice many leadership habits. For the purposes of this assignment, I will focus on the habit of reflective. It was my task to lead the group through the “Whale Watching” exercise. In this task, the group leader asked my partner and I to lead the entire group in a challenge where they would have to balance on a large platform that was resting on a pivot. Concerning the habit of reflective, I impacted the group by starting the exercise with a group reflection. Here I asked if any of the group members had ever participated in a task similar to this one. My peers used words such as “reflective,” “inclusive,” “motivational,” “positive,” “thoughtful,” and “open-minded” when describing my leadership traits during the challenge. I feel reassured knowing that my peers noticed many of the same habits and qualities within me that I realized within myself. Out of the nine cards I received, three recognized and made note of my reflective habit. These persons enjoyed that I began the challenge with a reflection exercise and my ability continuously assess each situations presented. Three more beige cards commented on the leadership habit of motivational. These persons spoke to my abilities of remaining positive, leading with a smile, and my strength of including everyone. The remaining three cards commented on me being prudent, purposefully engaged, and courageous. These persons also mentioned my being inclusive of everyone, my initiative, and my confidence in the group. I was somewhat surprised that three members of group commented on my motivational habit. In light of the weather and the challenge having occurred early in the morning, I did not recognize that I was being motivational. I felt encouraged knowing that my peers saw me as motivation even though I did not see myself this
