Literacy in a sense is the ability to simply read and write, but to other people like myself, it is an important life skill to not only understand others, but yourself as well. Literacy is not simply the ability to read a book or write an essay, it also encompasses analysis and perception. It is a way to communicate with others and have a deep understanding of the past and present, and a point of view for the future. Having the ability to read and write is a way to not only voice your idea or opinion, it helps to expand your knowledge. My small family has always been a family centered around literature. I enjoyed reading poetry and trying to decipher the message the author was trying to get across, by analyzing the words and imagery used in the work, I did this to try and find a way to connect to the poem. Soon I began to write my own poetry, because I was able to breathe a bit of my soul into the poems created and feel a deep connection. With these words I could hopefully influence others and convince them that not everything on the surface describes what lies deeper beneath it, at the heart of the words. Having an open mind also plays a big part in literacy and helps you to acquire a better understanding and hopefully a better connection with the text you are reading and the subject you are writing about. It is necessary in school to complete assignments and write essays, and to be able to communicate in efficient ways with classmates. Literacy continues to be my escape from the world around me, a place to go when I get tired of this one, but it has also taught me how to interact with others better. Being able to analyze and understand another persons work helps you to better your own. It is important to know how to read but it is important to also know how to analyze what you are reading, to dig deeper to get to the core of the story. Through analyzes you can gain a better sense of perception. Being able to analyze the world around you really helps you to be able to perceive the world and your surroundings in a more meaningful and effective way. What you read and right has a lasting effect on your way of perception and analysis, it can help you to realize how important it is to be aware of the world you live in and how you can predict
