I have learned many things throughout my first semester of nursing school through readings, literature and experiences.
Registered nurses can take many approaches to continue lifelong learning within their careers. One idea is participating in continuing education. The healthcare field is constantly changing, and values and facts learned in nursing school might have changed over time. It is essential to stay up-to-date on new information that is relevant to nursing practice in order to provide the best care possible for patients. Some of them being altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice (Teaching core nursing values, 2005). I believe all of the values mentioned have become easy for me to incorporate into my practice. Altruism comes easy to me because I have felt that throughout my life I have always had a concern for the welfare and well being of others. I believe everyone should be treated with respect and uniqueness, which is why human dignity seems clear to me. I also believe everyone should have the right to self-determination and make decisions about their own health care. Also, integrity comes easy to me because I have always felt that everyone should be honest and respect ethical manners no matter the situation. If employees acted in an unethical framework, it could result in unsafe outcomes for the patients. Lastly, social justice was easy to incorporate in to practice because I have always felt that everyone should be treated equally, not matter the circumstances. The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. While I was at my last job for a Jesuit University, I was introduced to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and his Ignatian Values, who was the author of these values in the Middle Ages, and they truly capture the tenets of the nursing profession. These values are Cura Personalis, Discernment, Finding God in All Things, Jesuit Pedagogy, Magis, Service of Faith and Promotion of Social Justice, and finally Women and Men for Others/Whole Persons of Solidarity for the Real World.
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Working in health care is an important job. People put their trust in us to do our very best to provide them with the absolute best care. Being entrusted with such responsibility requires nurses to conduct themselves both professionally and ethically. Nurses must adhere to the professional values of human dignity, integrity, autonomy, altruism, and social justice. It is these five values that guide us in our practice and as nurses we must promote and emulate these values. They play an important role in the quality of treatment and success of an organization and help us determine right from wrong.

Learning is considered a long term goal as it helps in continuity and evolution professionally (Thibault, 2011). It is important for me to be updated for best possible care provision. I will achieve this by developing interest to study towards attainment of highest levels of education for example PHD programs, attending education forums hosted by different universities, workshops and health seminars. My other long term ambitions include joining nurses’ professional organizations, administration duties and management skill acquisition and job promotions.
Reflective Practice is a continuous action that directly affects anyone who is a practitioner. Jasper (2006, p. 53) stated that the benefits to the profession are the development of the nursing knowledge base and the recognition that nurses are contributing to both patient care and improved practice. Further, Jasper (2006, p. 43) explains that Reflective Practice is the foundation upon which reflection and reflective learning are based.
My core values and beliefs are honesty, caring, family, and lifelong learning, which I use every day in my life. The core of nursing is caring, knowledge, and integrity that focuses on the patient’s needs, healing, safety, and encouragement. Personal and professional beliefs overlap the driving force of nursing. The qualities of a good nurse are not or cannot be turned off and on, and are part of the person I am. We are just helping hands that are always striving to help others. I am not perfect. I am a human being and sometimes mistakes will be made, but I always try my best. If something goes wrong, I will examine the situation, and learn from it to make me a better nurse than I was before. I will monitor and reflect on my own actions to ensure that I am staying true to what I believe are the best nursing practices. When we find conflicts between our personal beliefs and those of the patient, we should uphold our personal and professional ethical standards. We should find someone to guide us through our conflict to find a solution that will not compromise our own
The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. Personal core values are vital because they show our beliefs regarding truth and our behavior toward others. My personal core values include integrity, empathy, and compassion.
