Reflection Of Jake Starts School

On November 1, I performed another read aloud but with my practicum placement class. This class is a kindergarten class and full of 5 to 7 year old students. There are 15 boys and 7 girls. I surveyed the class on their likes and interests and majority said they loved Kindergarten. So, I chose Jake Starts School. This books depicts a little boy’s first day jitters. He is excited for his first day but extremely scared once he meets his teacher and classmates. He is physically clinging onto his parents and no one can convince him to enter the classroom alone. The teacher finally encourages Jake and his parents to come into the class to begin the first day of school. The teacher also decides to read a book to loosen her students up. The book happens to have something in common with Jake and she volunteers him to hold the book as she reads. Jake instantly feels relief and doesn 't need his parents there with him anymore. Of course, Jake was not really supposed to bring his parents along but they eased his mind and he felt comfortable in the classroom with them. Surprisingly, majority of students said they wanted their parents to go back home. They mainly had desires to have materialistic things with them, not their parents. After the classroom discussion, students were prompted to draw a picture of what they wished they could have brought on the first day of school. I showed my example and told students I wished I could have brought ice cream, a beach ball, my stuffed dog and a baby doll. As they drew, I walked around and asked each table to inform me of their drawings. This allowed mini collaborative discussions again and they were hearing from one another and their diverse
