For my Internship, I was lucky enough to do it with South Elgin Police department, which is located on ten north water street in South Elgin Illinois, 60177. There are about thirty members that work for the South Elgin Police Department. South Elgin Police department is a public safety service that is for the community of South Elgin. Their mission is to exist to enhance the quality of life for the South Elgin Community that supports core values. Such as integrity, reputation, family, faith, progressive and compassion for other people. This means that all of the values go with the way that Police Officer should handle them self and how everyone in society should act around each other on a daily basis. South Elgin Police Department has four detectives which include a sergeant that see over in ingestions deviation. They also have one crime prevention officer, who force on the community relationship between the department and the people of south Elgin. They also have one civilian public aid Officer who goes around the community tracking down vehicles that are abandoned and helps the department maintain cars. They also a k-9 unit to help out with their daily actives when needed. South Elgin also has to two civilians that work in the record department . They also have four sergeants for every shift. South Elgin is a small town Police department which makes is a good learning environment even if there is not a lot of heavy crime in the area. However, most people would be going to be doing an internship with a small department like south Elgin will be shocked due to the fact that things happen because people are humans and make mistakes. There are criminals even in a small town like South Elgin. I learned it still can be interesting in a small town of 21,000 people where crime in not as big as another
While I was in high school I did an internship with the District Attorney’s office in Topeka, KS. Although it did not directly relate to my chosen field of study I did learn a lot about our justice system and how probation officers interact with the DA and the court system. I feel internships are a great way to gain experience before you are actually being thrown into a job with all of its responsibilities. So, I plan to try and set-up an internship with a juvenile probation officer to help me gain some hands on experience. In addition to an internship, I also feel I can build my network through community service, teachers, peers and my sorority
I can gain hands on experience interning in governmental agencies and courtrooms, assisting forensic psychologists with referral materials and conducting research in the fields of law and psychology. I want to become a forensic psychologist within a criminal or family court, so having an internship related to psychology and law within NYC Ladders for Leaders can set me apart from other applicants by giving me more hands on experience. Despite the stereotype, police officers are people first and cops second. They generally act the way they are supposed to in their work environment. In Aiken I have the pleasure of knowing many cops. Personally I have seen nothing but good things come from them. Many in the Aiken area spend their extra time helping with youth sports. A retired police chief, in fact, helped coach a travel baseball team in Aiken recently. Aiken is definitely not the only place that generally has good cops. For instance, in Norfolk, Virginia officers make an effort to break stereotypes by being involved with the community. They play cards and other games with kids and many other things (Ciara). Cops throughout America are trying to break these stereotypes and show who they really are as a person to save lives and for the community to feel safe around law enforcement. Police officers act as individuals while off duty, but while on duty they react to certain situations in certain ways. Police officers react on duty the way they are trained. Law enforcement follows strict rules and regulations in general. They also follow rules on the way they react to certain situations. In most circumstances police officers react to situations and act in a better way than most average people. According to Police Chief Magazine: “Police officers are held to a higher standard of behavior by society, because they are stewards of the public (Gleason T).” Police officers in training are usually taught ethics to help them judge how to act on the job. This helps them not only solve problems right, but know consequences when they are done

This law enforcement agency deals with using government funding and donations to help increase policing in communities, while taking in consideration the officer’s life. Their position is to support the police, along with promoting the importance of safety. Some of their ideas are a nationwide public safety broadband network, next generation 911, Real-Time crime centers, and cybercrime. Police officers now go through extensive training, are better educated, physically fit, and have access to vast technologies in the fight against crime. Yet even with these additional attributes, the primary role of the police officer has remained the same, to serve and protect. The people who take up this profession do it knowing that it will involve working in high stress environments, rotating work shifts, long periods way from family and friends, and instances of life and death. These officers dedicate themselves to helping others and work to make their community a safer place. It 's a profession that requires ethics, honor, integrity, and professionalism if you wish to succeed as a police officer.
On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. Before I went for the ride along I had a different perspective about police work, I thought police work was much amusing and entertaining, but after the ride along with Officer Carl, I have realized that there is much more to police work and it often

Community policing is a concept and approach which recognizes that law enforcement alone cannot solve the root causes of crime. Law enforcement agencies are not staffed, trained nor equipped with all of the tools necessary to address the underlying factors that contribute to crime and disorder. A collaborative approach, enlisting the input and participation of public and private stakeholders will provide the greatest resources in the comprehensive effort to address the underlying factors contributing to crime.
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today. I have found that in order to be triumphant in my personal and professional goals, it has been necessary for me to reflect not only on my strides, but also my mistakes.
Throughout my one hundred and twenty-hour experience with the Gloversville Police Department, I learned many skills, values and the ways of this Police Department. Many of the calls and situations I went to often could relate to a certain theory that I learned in any of my law classes. I would recommend any student majoring in Criminal Justice to try to take an internship with a local law enforcement agency. I am currently signed up for the civil service test for Gloversville Police Department, If I do qualify for the Police I believe that this internship will give me a huge head start.
