Brandes and Boskic (2008) identified that reflection can help students to engage in deeper levels of thinking. They used metaphorical thinking as a way to help students create their portfolios. This kind of transformative learning comes from deep reflection and helps students to develop a holistic sense of what they are learning. When using technology, they found that students approached or described the learning as a journey. One student testimony explained that the portfolio allowed her to view her work as a whole instead of working in a linear progression towards one assessment. Other students constructed their portfolios using images or personal experiences, which they used metaphorically to show their progression in their portfolio. More

According to Acker and Halasek (2008), this is reason enough for K-12 educators and post-secondary educators to collaborate on academic success among high school students. To help in this collaboration, K-16 level educators decided to measure student writing through the CEPR Mixed Messages study. The eportfolio system that they opted to use provided the faculty and students with the use of immediate feedback and an environment which would foster improved student writing. One major objective for this study was to align “critical writing skills acquired by high school students and those identified as important by instructors responsible for college first-year writing programs.” In addition to faculty assessments, the students also did self reflections to report on the advantages of using ePortfolios. Findings from the faculty and students both showed that they developed skills for using digital portfolios as well as writing. In their conclusion Acker and Halasek found that for these skills to develop properly, the student institution must actively support the use of ePortfolios consistently among staff and
Middle School and AVID has prepared me for high school in many different ways. I will use everything I have learned in middle school and AVID in order to achieve success in high school. I have learned skills such as managing my time, organizing my work, and taking good and quality notes. If I use these skills in high school I know I will succeed. I also know that these skills would make it easier for me to reach my goals in completing dual enrollment and receiving at least a 4.0 GPA.
High school is the most challenging part of life, to a high schooler. Trying to find your social group is crucial and maintaining those friendships shapes your high school experience. Grades are not taken as seriously as they should be for most people, but are still maintained to please your parents. Missing class, skipping class, or being late in general is customary, and most of your time is managed by the ‘adults’ in your life. You’re in a confusing space, battling between your own free will and the restrictions that are inflicted on you by law, whether it be your parents’, your schools, or even state laws, which regulate what time you 're allowed to be out, what you can wear, who you can date (that 's if you 're allowed to date at all),
In the article, “Life After High School” by Annie Murphy Paul, it explains that when growing up things will change from high school though in the end actions in high school will determine how life will later be. The article is a cliche in itself and gives itself a sense of irony. In the article, it writes about how being an outsider in high school might not be the ideal situation, but can lead to success. Paul receives statements from the author Alexandra Robbins, who wrote the book The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth. In a statement Robbin says, “Many of the differences that cause a student to be excluded in schools are the identical traits or real-world skill that others will value, love, respect or find compelling about that person in
The purpose of this reflection essay is to demonstrate my understanding of how the content of the course and the assessment tasks that were completed. I will be reflecting on how these tasks have influenced my personal practice framework and illustrate my personal growth as well as my learning as a result of undertaking the activities included in the course throughout the semester. This reflection essay will cover areas that were new to me within the course. It will include areas where I was able to demonstrate knowledge and skills I didn 't know I had. In addition with any areas I found to be challenging and I will acknowledge ideas about how I will use this new knowledge to influence my personal practise framework.
I personally like to read up on a subect and take notes on it at the same time. Once I have completed my notes I like to rewrite them into my own words and add any additional thoughts that might go along with it. I believe that this process allows me to have a better understanding of the subject. It also allows me to think about it based on my own personal feeling. I can ask myself questions like, do I agree with it, or what don’t I understand, or what would make this easier to understand. When you think about reflection most people think about their personal life, but it can be used for classes and for
After a summer internship at a news station that was in direct correlation with my declared undergraduate major, I am anxious to begin focusing my work and study toward higher education student affairs. My experience this summer forced me to do some self-evaluation and assessment as far as my strengths, weaknesses, and what kind of environment I envision myself thriving in. My vision for my career is ever developing.
The semester has came to a close, and as I write this portfolio, I reflect on the topics, ideas, and questions that have arisen and been discussed throughout the duration of this course. I lift up a thick green folder, filled with paper clips, staples, and hundreds of words written in ink (and a few in pencil). I open it up and glance through a collection of focused thoughts that document a growing and stretching in my thoughts about the teaching of writing. I think back to the first time that I entered the doors of the classroom, and honestly, it doesn’t seem that I’ve changed that much. But, I can also glance through my writer’s notebook, along with this folder-full-of-thoughts, and see the long strides that I have taken towards a more complete

Psychology deals with the study of mental processes and a variety of behaviors. In order to fully comprehend ourselves, we need to understand the causes of our behaviors and our outlook on life. Habits and behaviors have positive and negative effects in our life. When we know ourselves and learn about our unique personality, we can develop and pursue goals. Psychology also helps us to understand other people and the differences of people. Gaining this knowledge can improve the relationships and enhance our communication skills. Throughout the psychology course I gained knowledge in various areas, and the topics that impacted me the most included: the introvert, anxiety disorders, stress management, self discipline and how to develop strong relationships.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
Deciding to go back to school for my master’s degree was not a particularly easy choice. Just starting a new job I found myself surrounded by smart, highly educated peers. It took me ten years to complete my undergraduate coursework, and while I was the first person in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree, surrounded by coworkers that had advanced degrees caused me to feel very inadequate. Promoted to this position based on my merit and knowledge, I kept reminding myself that I did not need an advanced degree for validation. Yet, I was also faced with the fact that I would need to be competitive with my peers should further advancement become available. When considering my options the cost and time commitment needed to be taken into account. Knowing I was going to be working a graveyard made it difficult to see how I would fit in time to
What would cause people to be a sense of reflection? Why is being reflective so important for God-fearing individuals? Before one can answer the proposed questions, they must conclude with a finite and definite meaning of the word reflection. Per dictionary.com, reflection is a thought occurring in consideration or mediation . Basically, reflection is thinking about or seriously pondering over what one does or has done. It’s like one is seeking learn from experiences and allowing them to be their teacher in what they could do differently the next time. “Reflective learning first came to a modern Focus to John Dewey in 1933... reflective learning allowed for people to connect ideas to pass knowledge in order to solve problems.”
This was the main issue that hindered LS1 from being a successful lesson, however, after the feedback with my tutor, what I thought was my capacity to analyse the language aims was in fact the way I chose how to stage the procedure plan and how I did not take into consideration my students’ perspective of the class. For that reason, I decided to tackle my planning and staging more effectively in my LS2. By narrowing the focus of the lesson, as well as keeping my students’ interest, I could interact more naturally with them and fostered more opportunities for personalisation.
As human beings, we inhabit certain roles in our lives which are always changing as we grow into ourselves. An aspect of this process is through socialization in which we internalize different perspectives about life as far as beliefs, values and norms are concerned. Such constructs are established in our social spheres as well as part of our society as a whole. Through socialization we are able to fall into a certain status in the social world that ultimately has particular roles and responsibilities associated with that status. For me I feel that my role has changed as I have grown, currently I have fallen into a status of a student and daughter but also a caregiver. As such I have conformed to certain societal expectations while also denying
