The terms leisure, health, and wellness all have a similar correlation to one another and with that correlation they also play a large role in our lives, from when we grow up all the way to the present. I can look all the way back to when I was a kid and reflect on leisure activities I chose and participated in. When I was a boy I had many activities, I enjoyed doing that would entertain me when I was bored and since I was a kid with little to no obligations I was bored often. In order for me to fill my wide-open schedule I found things that I was interested and pursued them. The biggest activities I did for fun where competitive swimming and playing the guitar. I enjoyed competitive swim because not only was it fun to participate in some friendly …show more content…
The big difference was that I was a little more mature and started to value my free time because I started to have more obligations such as school and working. At that age my activities I was doing where activities that helped me escape all the responsibilities I had at the time. The activities that I participated in my free time where football/conditioning and guitar still. I started to gain more passion for these activities because they were something that I began to value when I had the time to do them. Playing football was more important for my health and wellness because I always had to be in good shape in order to play and when I was playing football I felt like a healthier person overall because I was always involved in physical activity everyday either on the field or in the weight room. Other than football my passion for guitar had grown even more form when I was little to my teenage years. It was something that I held close to me because it was something that I loved doing on my free time whenever I had the chance. Now that I was a teenager I also got better at mastering guitar which made it more enjoyable to play because the music that I was playing was actually sounding like music and not a couple of stings plucked here and …show more content…
When I started attending college I had a realization that my free time to starting to become sparse and I had to spend more time focusing on my education. When I started college, I was not the best at time management and everything I did for leisure was put on hold which made being a student more stressful. As I began to grasp my college curriculum I had spots of free time and now that I had those spots of free time they began to become more and more valuable to me. This was the point that I realized what I truly enjoy doing and that was guitar and trying to see family and friends as much as possible. I valued these because both of those things are what I hold close to me. When I did these activities, I was doing them for leisure but now I have realized they promoted my health and wellness as well. It didn’t promote them in the physical aspect but my mental one. When I was either with family and friends or playing guitar it was an escape to all my stresses and it helped me with my sanity and helped me unwind from everything that was weighing me

6. Freedom of Choice, fortunately in recreation and leisure we have the opportunity of selecting those activities that we like, can afford, and are able to perform. This is one of the characteristics that make leisure a unique experience. Fortunately, we have the freedom to select what we want in opposition to work, where we have to do what is told to us and expected from us, based on our contractual
...society now classifies leisure as simply ‘free time.’ Time away from work or school, no matter how it is enjoyed, is more broadly defined as leisure today.
Health and well-being are consistently brought up on the purposes of therapeutic recreation. Traditionally, health has been defined as the absence of organic and mental disease along with relative freedom from chronic pain and discomfort ( ). More recently, in the practice of therapeutic recreation, definitions on health have emphasized the whole person and state of optimal performance, rather than just the absence of disease and discomfort. There is now a greater recognition of the integrity of the body and mind, the role of the person’s environment in contributing with disease and health, and the importance of promoting healthful living ( ). Health is a determinant of quality of life yet the quality of one’s life, financial resources, access to care, self-enrichment opportunities, and social support, also influences ones
The statement of Health is socially constructed, because it is connected to the belief’s which we associate about “who is heathy”? health can be define in a negative approach as the absence of disease but WHO (2016) define health in a positive approach by saying “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” Even WHO claims that the definition of health has not be changed since this adoption in 1948, I can say there is not an agreed definition of health because not everyone can define health in a positive approach as WHO. Blaxter in her study (1990) concluded health can be define in three approach positive, negative and functional. Health
Wellness in a workplace is a key factor determining how productive an organization shall be. This wellness encompasses two concepts, organizational well-being and the psychological well-being. Organization wellness encompasses collective well-being within the organization and this is brought forth by concepts such as embracing diversity, collaboration and fairness. Psychological wellness on the other hand involves the general well-being of the particular persons in the workplace. Essentially, psychological wellness of the employees is paramount over the organizational well-being. There is no general structure how this should be carried out- each organization may adopt its own specific model.
There are many different determinants of health and wellbeing as previously discussed. However, these determinants do not act alone but, they all intersect. These means multiple factors determine an individual’s health. I will now explain how age, gender, social status and communities can all affect health but, there are also other factors, such as race and ethnicity, that intersect to determine a person’s health.
My own personal philosophy of leisure has been shaped by past and present activities I do for leisure and why I do them. To me, leisure is the sense of being free from external stressors that I face in my life such as school or work. The positive outcomes from partaking in leisure are generally overlooked and often underestimated. Leisure affects our emotions, our physical and mental health, and aids in the creation of relationships. In my own personal life, I have done and still participate in leisure as a way to sooth myself or unwind from the stress of school or work. The release of pent up emotions and energy for individuals helps their relationships with others and their overall health as well. When stress is released, an individual is
Thus according to Pieper, leisure is an attitude of the mind and a state of the soul that fosters a capacity to perceive the reality of the world. Pieper establishes that the ancient and medieval philosophers understood the great value and importance of leisure in doing work and thus, eventually led to building of great societies. He also points out that religion can be born only in leisure as it is only through leisure that actual worship of God is possible. Leisure has been, and always will be, the basic foundation of any culture or religion.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Ways people quit smoking are by mental and note form reminders of why they are quitting, rewarding themselves, distraction, using gum or healthy snacks e.g celery and carrots, exercise, drinking cool water and nicotine patches or supplements.
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
Wellness is defined as “an active life-long process of becoming aware of and making choices to achieve optimal health and a more successful and balanced existence” (Ren et al., 2007). Wellness incorporates the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of an individual. When it came to thinking, planning and developing my SMART goal I decided to focus on my physical health as this was an area that I needed to improve the most and would also contribute positively to my spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and environmental wellbeing aswell. In this reflective essay I will discuss and reflect on this journey. This reflection will include why I decided to focus on this specific SMART goal aswell as how I found the SMART goal journey. I will then discuss my own view on my attitudes for health and wellness and will discuss what a SMART goal is and the importance of them in order to start working towards those goals and to positively change behaviours and habits. This reflection will also include challenges that may be experienced in relation to behaviour change. These may include time management and motivation.
Outdoor recreation is something that everyone needs. Finding that place within yourself that allows you to forget about everything. Whether that be playing with your kids in the nearby park, fishing with your grandfather, hiking with someone or just by yourself you learn something new about yourself. Some people use recreation to forget about something and they use being outside as a calming effect. Williams and Stewart (1998) believe that nature, as a place, creates an emotion bond, has a complex meaning to the person, and that people have this draw back to the place. To get the same feeling that someone would get while doing an activity in nature to simulate Williams and Stewart’s (1998) belief, I recently participated in an
