As a primarily logical thinker, I find one of my most prominent weaknesses is not my lack of creativity, but my lack of creativity applied in a constructive manner. I find myself daydreaming of what I could do, but often times I am ripped away from my whimsical motivation once reality sets back in and I am once again faced with repetitive math problems or uninspired required readings. I believe, especially being in the field of computer science where this is quite evident, that knowledge is only useful when used for change, but change cannot come in such a developed world without originality and significantly creativity. From my primarily community driven essay I wrote about my high school, my community engagement project explained in the supplement section, and my dedication to community service activities and clubs at my current school, it shouldn’t be hard to see that I become dedicated to whatever community that I am a part of at the time. Having explored the Civic Engagement section of the UChicago website, I have much respect for the university's community and their dedication to the city-in-need in which they reside in. I do believe that Chicago has potential, but for positive results to be seen, people outside of the city must want change as well. Because I will be experiencing a wide range of core classes in addition to my major specific classes, if for some reason in the distant future I decide to switch careers, I will still be able to apply what I learned from UChicago in my everyday life. I personally would like to start my own company. In college, I would like to travel abroad, secure an internship and possibly work for a company for a few years to fund my own startup. I believe that I will only be happy if I am the leader of my own life, I am my own boss, and I can pursue my own interests. With a more widespread core education, I will be able to use what I learn more often in the process of starting my own company where I may have to do the work of multiple jobs on my own. UChicago also hosts an extensive internship program and study abroad program to assist me in my more immediate goals. Because of the unique approach to learning supported by UChicago along with the positive mentality of the community as well as ample opportunities to step out of my comfort zone, I feel as if UChicago is the school for me. Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. Coming into this experience, I questioned where I would find my place in the Senate. In 2014 I came here as a page and was able to witness daily floor action, but I never had the opportunity to be a part of day to day office business. I knew I would be at the bottom of the totem pole as an intern, but I wanted to feel as if I was making an impact on Senator Reid’s last year in office. In an office as large as Harry Reid’s it is hard to feel as if you are making an impact. I had the misconception that I would be working closely with him; however, thus far I have only spoken with the Senator one time. Within the first week I readjusted my expectations to try and find my role within the office. I was still doubting the impact I would make here this summer. With the Senator retiring, the office is tending to run particularly slow. When available, work was handed down to us by the Legislative Correspondents. Work primarily consisted of covering hearings, attending briefings, and doing research. Going into English 1301, I expected the class to be difficult but also a substantial learning experience. Not only have I found connections within each of the essays I have written, but additionally have become more engaged in critical thinking and collaborative work. Within the syllabus, we were given concepts that we ,as students, needed to meet by the end of the course. I have met the student learning outcomes throughout this course as shown through all three essays.
Winston Churchill once stated “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” During my time here at English 180 I saw some improvement in my writing in terms of content. I feel as if I am more capable of writing an essay with better content than I was able to do back in High School. My essays have shown improvement because I did change my style of writing a bit and I added something different every time I wrote a paper. In English 180 we wrote several papers, but each one had a change to fit the certain criteria. Winston Churchill’s quote perfectly describes the purpose of the class English 180. Writing different pieces with a different format and branching out was key in the subjects of our writing assignments.
The end of the semester has arrived and with it comes time for reflection. This semester has had many ups and downs. However, one thing is for sure: it was a fantastic first semester of college.
My first semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been everything that I expected it to be. I knew it would be strenuous to move to a new city totally different from what I had grown up in. I also know that this would put a strain on making new friends, keeping up with my social life, maintaining a healthy mental and physical and healthy lifestyle, and achieving my goals - nonetheless, I have managed to do all of these things and have a splendid time doing so.
Chapter 10 is entitled Conflict Management in Groups. This is a very essential chapter for all members of a group to read and understand. Fortunately, my group members and I have not had a problem with getting along. It just so happened that four members of my group already know each other from another class they are in together. So, they already got along and had some connection with one another. I think we all have good personalities and we enjoy working with each other. The characteristics of our group allow us to be a successful group. The semester is coming to an end, and we have worked hard together to perform all tasks and accomplish all our goals. Getting to the stage where we are now involved a lot of comprimising and negotiating. So, the two terms I would like to concentrate on from Chapter 10 is comprimise and negotiation. To me, comprimise is meeting someone half way. You may have to adjust some of your beliefs or ideas to fit the beliefs or ideas of another group member. the book defines comprimise as a middle ground. You show a moderate concern for both task and social relationships in groups. The next term I would like to look at is negotiation. I would define negotiation as giving and taking to reach a common goal. The book’s definition of negotiation is a process by which a joint decision is made by two or more parties. After researching information for my group project and listening to another group’s presentation, it is evident that everyone thinks comprimise and negotiation are very important. There was a strong emphasis on avoiding conflict in the group
I am a 2016 graduate of Byron Nelson High School. Life here at Collin is a great experience. I am here because I play at a Baseball Academy in McKinney. I plan on majoring in Kinesiology and receiving my degree from either the University of Oklahoma or Texas Christian University, wherever my baseball career takes me.
The time passed so quickly, this semester is almost done. After this semester of study, the goals I have made the most progress is the course Objective 1: “Reading texts from a variety of disciplines in a variety of genres”. Before when the teacher asks to read some articles I will just read it once and get over it. So I often times forget the detail of the story. And have to reread the reading all over again. I don’t like to read something over and over again, because that will make me get bored. For example, my history class is requiring a lot reading, and all the reading about history is boring and long. So I only read it once, because in my opinion spending a lot time in reading about this boring history book is horrible. Unfortunately, we are having a quiz on it, I start to recall, and I have some blur memory about the book. So I take out the book, and start to read, but is all too late for it. I have a bad grade on it, I will forever remember this lesson. If I read more in-deep and carefully, I might not get a bad grade on my history quiz. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Over the course of the semester, I feel I have developed a lot as a writer. When I first began this class, I considered myself to be a decent writer. In high school and college, I developed my writing skills, but I always knew there was room for improvement. In fact, one of my high school teachers always said that no matter how good of a writer you were or how long you had been writing, there was always room for improvement. So I entered this class knowing that I could write well, but could learn to write better.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
