As the semester meets an end, I am enthralled into reflecting upon my progression as a writer, reader, and a prospective professional throughout this course coordinated by Mr. Billings. Nonetheless, considering the inevitable flawed nature of writing, there are some aspects that I still need to work on, and eventually master as I move forward in my academic career. I learned immensely starting from a variety of writing styles, proper use of MLA format to read and to critically use evidence to formulate a strong and persuasive essay.

Every time I would finish a paragraph, I would critically break the sentences down and improve my initial word choice and punctuation. In addition, I took peer-revision very seriously, even though sometimes I would not have a paper completed, I insisted that my classmates gave me feedback on the aspects they thought was efficient and others that needed improvement. When our assignments pertained to class texts and outside readings, I would always refer back to the chapter summary and use the patterns in a text to infer meaning to collect important quotes, and shreds of evidence that the author(s) presented. Along the same note, I tended to keep track of the mistakes that occurred more frequently and improved upon them; when writing an essay, journal or reflection, I made sure that I was employing the appropriate language and if they met the requirements for each paper. Lastly, another aspect of writing the I deeply care about is – flow/structure. The assignment that most demanded a chronologically organized structure was unquestionably the last major assignments (Problem and Solution). This assignment essentially incorporated all the skills we cultivated throughout the semester, namely: proper citation, identify arguments and counter arguments, develop a debatable thesis, selective research methods and the correct usage of rhetorical
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
When it came to the process of writing my first, second, and third essay’s, there was clear visual improvement that I have become a better writer in certain aspects. Through each Milestone I have rediscovered the true importance of each step in the writing process. Outlining my thoughts and ideas on my essay topic is essential to building an organized draft. Proofreading and reforming the first initial draft yourself, as well as having friends and family read your essay helps create a neater, more cohesive essay. Knowing these important steps will help in me succeed in my remaining courses here at Southern New Hampshire University.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
As I chose to take this class and better my writing skills at a college level, I knew this class was going to be difficult. With a total of four essays to write I knew I had to be on my game from the beginning. Throughout durations of this class, I have learned how to become more responsible, plan ahead of time, and how to become a better writer. With each mistake made i have been able to learn and improve. An Ad Analysis, Comparative Analysis, Narrative, and an Argumentative Essay are the four papers we had to write for the course.
Coming into this experience, I questioned where I would find my place in the Senate. In 2014 I came here as a page and was able to witness daily floor action, but I never had the opportunity to be a part of day to day office business. I knew I would be at the bottom of the totem pole as an intern, but I wanted to feel as if I was making an impact on Senator Reid’s last year in office. In an office as large as Harry Reid’s it is hard to feel as if you are making an impact. I had the misconception that I would be working closely with him; however, thus far I have only spoken with the Senator one time. Within the first week I readjusted my expectations to try and find my role within the office. I was still doubting the impact I would make here this summer. With the Senator retiring, the office is tending to run particularly slow. When available, work was handed down to us by the Legislative Correspondents. Work primarily consisted of covering hearings, attending briefings, and doing research. Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me.
In the beginning of the English Composition 1 course, I felt as if I was not a very good writer. A lot of what I learned in high school was completely different than that of my college English course. Over the course of this semester our class worked on several different types of essays which include scholarly discourse, discourse community analysis, a persuasive paper, and finally a critical reflective essay. After almost completing the course, I feel like I have grown to become a more prepared writer because of all of the useful information that I have learned. Campus resources such as the Writing Center have also contributed tremendously to my success in my English course. I am convinced that everything that I have learned this current semester will be transferrable to all of my future classes because I will most likely have to write other scholarly essays, lab reports, and so on. Some of the many things that I have learned over the semester are that when writing a thesis statement you must include everything that you plan to talk about in your paper. Also learned is that feedback helps with your growth and allows for you to fix the things you did wrong in the next paper, because you will know what to do and what not to do. All of these things can be used in my future classes throughout my college career. This essay reflects on how my writing of English Composition essays has grown, or benefited from continuous revising, visiting the Writing Center, and implementing the feedback I have received from my instructor.
The writing process has always been a constant struggle of mine throughout high school. I was never taught the process well enough to get better at it. Writing essays wasn’t a common task to do at my school. I have been working on my writing and this chapter helped me realize what I need to work on during this class and be aware of.
From my writing collection, during this course, I have chosen three writing samples. The first report entitles "Reflection", demonstrate ideation strategies. It shows how I structured my writing process from brainstorming to come up with my thoughts. My second report "Memo" helps to develop skills in composing effective workplace documents. Lastly, my final report demonstrates how an audience analysis enhances your ability to connect with readers and listeners through persuasive writing.
During the course of the semester, all of the writing and research skills I developed helps to strengthen my self-confidence in many areas and it aids me in achieving my goals for the future. By developing more effective research approaches for finding and citing sources, I advanced from an inexperienced writer to a confident writer with the suitable knowledge to create effective essays to capture my audience. Having confidence in my abilities to use the skills I learned will help me to become a success in college. With more practice and valuation of my strengths and weaknesses, I can continue to improve and become an excellent communicator in the future.
Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
