I learned how to use visually descriptive words, to compare and contrast, reasoning and evidence, the use of ethos, pathos and logos. We read our peers essays, and applied what I learned to correct the grammatical errors, gave suggestions to word placement, and sentence usage. Reviewing and editing skills learned will be very helpful in the future as we continue to write essays during college. I could definitely take the next step forward in my writing skills. I have truly enjoyed my English classes and know what I have learned will be extremely valuable in my future career.
All of these things can be used in my future classes throughout my college career. This essay reflects on how my writing of English Composition essays has grown, or benefited from continuous revising, visiting the Writing Center, and implementing the feedback I have received from my instructor. The process of writing and revising of my first paper for English Composition 1 benefited from the various resources offered at the University of Oklahoma. The first paper that I wrote was the scholarly discourse pa... ... middle of paper ... ...xplaining it with relevant sources and research. Although I have learned a lot and have improved my writing skills tremendously I still feel that I have more to work on.
English 1010 was exactly the class I needed to improve myself as an assertive reader and writer. This semester, I have learnt not only about genre and genre selection, but also using concise language, sources, improving drafting skills and overcoming writers block. In How to Write Anything, the various genres and sub genres were displayed. This has helped to me to identify the genre of any paper based on the type paper I’m completing. For Example, I know that if I’m completing a product review, the genre of that paper is Evaluation.
Without being given specific guidelines, besides “write about a memorable experience involving reading or writing”, I was forced to use my own creativity to write a paper that met the limited requirements (I use the word limited very loosely). This first paper really helped me figure out my style and made and impact on my other papers that I wrote for this class. As I look back on my first semester of English at Tri-C, I can tell that I have grown in my writing ability. The changes that I have made will impact my writing style and techniques for the rest of my time in college and life.
This English course was a vastly informative class. We covered lots of criteria material and discussed topics during class. During the course, I have accomplish a variety of goals I once thought were unachievable. I still have a little ways to go to become the best writer I can be but by taking this course I have been able to expand and learn as a writer, editor, and analyzer of my work, peers work, and academic work. I have learned from others as others have learned from me.
With the feedback from fellow classmates and Dr. Eldred I have continued to better my writing skills. One skill I always use is that I make a box outline, I learned this in high school. It allows me to see what certain points I would like to cover in each paragraph and also lets me know how many paragraphs I need to cover all my information. My main weaknesses with all my papers were summarizing too much, citing quotes, and not having a good thesis. I’ve always struggled with coming up with a supportive, specific thesis.
My ultimate goal in writing and reading is to get advance and go beyond my expertise. I only wanted to obtain new knowledge in writing and reading, but the first year learning goals helped me understand what I need to work on to achieve my ultimate goal. I have learned to read variety of texts and write different styles of writing in English. The work I have done in each semester has fulfilled almost all of the first year learning goals. Learning new ways of writing and reading is very significant because it helps us become a better writer and reader.
As far as any other information that I feel that shows my improvement as a writer I would like to include any and all of the information that from the reading assignments as well as any in class information that has helped with my writing skills over the semester. The reading assignments have been instrumental, because they help to give me a framework for what I am supposed to be writing.
I gained several useful ideas and gathered valuable tips relating to grammar, wording, and organization of my paper, such as the tip to use the thesaurus to avoid repetition of terms. I also received lots of positive feedback on many papers, which added to my confidence and allowed me to see my improvement! Overall, going to the writing center was very beneficial to me, allowing others to take a look at my paper to point me in the right direction. Further into the semester, I was told my papers were written with high quality, so I knew I was advancing in my
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics.
