I am in the process of obtaining my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education with the focus on Special Education. I began college courses towards this degree back in 2009 when I started working at a local daycare. In that semester I took four courses to become a full-time student, in which I took the most important courses at that time. I took some time off after the fall 2009 semester and the spring 2010 semester, due to the pregnancy and birth of my daughter. Once my daughter was in preschool each weekday, I decided to go back to school for the fall 2015 semester. I have been taking courses since then with no breaks in between in hopes to obtain my degree next year. I have completed in total between the school year of 2009/2010 and since beginning back in 2015, 46 credit hours. Due to this, I have 23 …show more content…
With this semester, I will not be considered a full-time student due to these courses only being 3 credit hours each. To be a full-time student, I would need 12 credit hours and these courses will only count for 9 credit hours total. Due to time restraints and the availability of the courses needed, I am only able to take these three courses next semester. Once the spring 2017 semester is completed, I will have a total of 67 credit hours of the 69 credit hours required for the degree. I will obtain the last credit hours from the remaining course that I will complete fall of 2017, which is the practicum (internship) course. The practicum (internship) course, will count as 4 credit hours and that will actually put me over the required credit hour number of 69 to 71. During my freshman year in high school, my mother remarried and I had to move from Colorado to Kentucky. One year later, we relocated back to Colorado after they divorced. During my junior year in high school, my mother remarried again and I had to change schools again, although we remained in Colorado. Thus, I did not have a sense of continuity during high school and although I recognized that my path would lead me to college, I was not ready to commit myself to school full time. Instead I went to work full time as a grocery clerk and worked my way up to assistant manager. I then moved into customer service work and finally fell into an advertising manager position. I took several night courses during this period until I was ready to commit to school full time. Although I could have continued with work, I knew that it was not what I wanted to do and once I committed myself to attending school and realized that I wanted to study Sociology, I have proven myself to be an above average student. This past year, I earned all "A"s in my courses.
I focused on education because that is where I felt most qualified and because I enjoyed the idea of working with young children everyday. I was able to find employment in the Mountain Empire Unified School District working as a D/HH teacher’s aid and I work there to this day. Recently, I applied into the San Diego Mesa College Interpreting program. I started out with two classes and decided to see how the semester would go and if I would want to continue or pursue my masters in Deaf Education. Both career options were important to me but as a working single mother, I believed that the best option for me would present itself later on. I enjoyed being back in school and what the courses had to offer but was frustrated with the structure of the program. I felt that with the many things going on in my life, that it was not the path I wanted to take at the time. I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.

Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
I took extra credits in Spring 2015, as well as 19 credits in Fall 2015. During the summer I took two courses in order to graduate a semester early and be done with AIC after my senior soccer season. I also took the LSAT in June 2015, as well as October 2015, in order to be able to apply to law school during my last semester of college. All of this was on top of being a college athlete and working during school. To many 21 year olds, these responsibilities would be too much to handle in such a short time, but I loved all the stress that came with it. From an early age I was aware that teachers treated students differently based on race, ethnicity, class, and gender. From K-12, I attended racially, ethnically, and economically diverse public schools. Some of my classmates’ parents had Ivy League educations and others were had little education. Interestingly, among my classmates, there were both educated people and uneducated people on welfare. The teachers’ prejudices were always clear though; the upper-class, white, blonde-haired kids were the favorites, and the children of color were always the ones in trouble. Coming into this experience, I questioned where I would find my place in the Senate. In 2014 I came here as a page and was able to witness daily floor action, but I never had the opportunity to be a part of day to day office business. I knew I would be at the bottom of the totem pole as an intern, but I wanted to feel as if I was making an impact on Senator Reid’s last year in office. In an office as large as Harry Reid’s it is hard to feel as if you are making an impact. Before I came to UNCP, I went to a school called High Point Central (HPC). We were labeled as one of the poorest schools in the state because we sat in the Guilford County Public School System. At HPC I had a teacher named Mrs. Gilmore she was the first real English teacher that really taught us how to write. I went into the class with my “9th Grade writing” (as she would call it) as a Jr. it was the first experience I had ever gotten a horrible grade on my writing. The very first thing she told us was that “If you do not know how to write in MLA you are not going to make it past 2nd semester in college.” This struck me in a way that I knew I had to get my writing together, the last day in her class of my senior year she told me to watch

Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
